Because family photos - candidate with devoted spouse and kids - are a mainstay of campaign ads, Rep. Adam Smith and his wife, Sara, displayed flawless political timing yesterday.

The week after filing to run for his third term in Congress, the 9th District Democrat became a first-time father when Sara gave birth to an 8-pound daughter, Kendall Charlotte, at Seattle's Swedish Medical Center.

With Kendall's arrival, her father narrowed the family-photo gap with his Republican challenger, King County Councilman Chris Vance, R-Auburn.
