From the Notebook of An Old Man

(1899)

Translated by Constance Garnett (1861-1946)

The death of Chekhov's brother Nikolay from tuberculosis while under his care in 1889 influenced "A Dreary Story", finished that September. It is about a man who confronts the end of a life which he realises has been without purpose.
