No seriously, are there leagues and the league winners get to go to the world cup? Is there a point system? Does anybody who wants to play play?

I believe there is a year long qualification that elimates many countries and reduces it down to these. I'm sure a bigger football fan than I could give you more specifics.

Mhm, apparently. I only wish we had more talent for really important matters

You Argentines are something special in South America (there used to be some jealousy, maybe...). Hard times these past few years, maybe, but I've met enough of you all to know that it shouldn't be THIS hard... There's enough talent and a history of making use of it. Just have to get back on track, maybe? Just like everybody everywhere, really. maybe in different ways...

I am not a football expert, but what virgil said is right. There are qualification matches. The host doesn't have to qualify, so the host's team is in no matter what. There's an article on wikipedia about it: WM Qualification

Countries are grouped off by continent and play each other in world cup qualifying rounds where a scale based on scores (winning a home game is better) decides who gets in and who doesnt... The previous winner and the host country are automatically entered (as far as i'm aware)

I think i've explained that right... I know the football is different to the Rugby world cup...

Don't worry about it. I've never yet met a fairy thief who knew the first thing about football.

hehehe! I know theres something to do with winning (or is it drawing) on home ground... I think its when its a final game between two teams that determines who goes through to the world cup. if they draw the team whose home ground it is qualifies. Knowing me however i've probably gotten mixed up with something else!

Er....let's move along, shall we, before the whole thing becomes a tangle of misinformation?

So how is the fairy thief business these days? And is it that you're a thief who happens to be a fairy, or are you a human being who steals fairies?

So, what did you think of the friendly between England and Mexico?

I don't think the score has reflected the game.

Ah, I'm free to be me again then...

Yes, half sort of watched it, I'd agree though I thought Mexico were pretty good in attack overall but they couldn't defend on that performance. These sort of matches don't tell us much though - you can't read too much into them.

I'm convinced that England haven't got a chance of winning though, I can't believe they are 6-1 third favourites, I wouldn't touch that at all. If you want to take my betting advice (see Grand National thread for form?) punt for Italy now and lay off a little after the group stages for a free bet because they are sure to progress the group stages and are decent odds, France the same. For outright winners though I wouldn't look passed Brazil or Spain.
