social consciousness is sooo appealing (whether the author's or the character's) - I vote for Atticus Finch.

Hmm...he's not a Romantic hero, but the closest thing to a hero on this list: Atticus Finch!!

My own hero though: John Proctor

He might be my favourite written character ever. And when I say "might be", I mean "definitely is".

No chance of getting Renzo added to the list? I doubt most of you have read The Betrothed, but it is essentially The Italian novel.

I voted for Gabriel Oak but only because poor Will Ladislaw is missing

I voted for Gabriel Oak because it is the kind of man that I would like to be with in reality too (Adam from East of Eden is a reliable, kind, trustworthy and hardworking man too).

But I was very tempted to vote for Rochester too because he is a very exciting and interesting character, kindhearted too, with a good taste for women character (Jane Eyre is my favourite book and character) plus he is terribly sexy. So he is the perfect hero for a novel although I wouldn't get along very well if he was a real man I am afraid.

I recognize most of the names but cant pin a few of them, Yossarian? Renzo?
Im really bad at names, that aside I have never seen what anyone can see either appealing or romantic in Darcy, he is just annoying in fact most romatic heroes are annoying and need a good kick or two, dont even get me started on the male Bronte charcters.. grrrrr
