I just discovered this forum, and have briefly checked some of the postings here. There is a very broad range of backgrounds represented by the forum's members.
For the past thirty years I have worked as a naval architect, and for ten years before that, I served in the US Navy. Now approaching retirement age, I have been interested in writing over the last ten years or so. I have written stories ranging from 2,000 words to 80,000. Some of these are fictitious, while others are true. The only published work I've been involved in is a compilation of sea stories that I coordinated, with contributions from eighty others who served in the Navy and Marine Corps, describing situations ranging from frightening war situations to light-hearted comical happenings.
The pieces I'm proudest of include two fictitious items. The shorter one is called The Journal and it describes the life of my uncle before he was killed in World War II. Since he never got around to writing down anything about his life, and we know very little about him, the events that he records in his journal are made up, but are loosely based on my own experiences in the Navy.
The longer piece is called Two Crossings, which describes an eastbound crossing of the Atlantic on the Queen Mary in 1936 by a Jewish couple who have vastly improved their lives since coming to the United States thirty years before, and who recall their westbound journey which first brought them to America, and which was made under much harsher conditions than those aboard the Queen Mary.

hi there im actually new to this world of literature. its great to see that there is a place for discussion for book worms lyk usneway im really new to this ,and i dont no how exactly to use this forum. if there is any helpful suggestions i would be grateful. Currently i am looking at Emily Dickinson Poetry need alot of work and analysis on her poems. is there any page in particular in the forum that i should look at?

I am a 24 year old film and literature student from France currently on an exchange trip to Montréal, I am a verocious reader, aspiring writer and literary critic, and drinker of red wine, I was born in a gutter and raised by wolves, I like camembert and films from the 60s, I hate smilies and do-gooders; my favorite authors are Margaret Atwood, Marguerite Duras, Alberto Moravia, Dostoyevsky, Nabokov, Angela Carter and many others I can't think of now (but, as you can see, I like a bit of everything...).

Hello everyone! I have been reading on this forum and website a lot, but decided that I would like to join in order to talk to other literature lovers! People who love good literature are really hard to come by! I am currently reading "Emma" by Jane Austen, and have just fininshed "Northanger Abbey" also by Jane Austen. I am an avid reader living in Hong Kong. I love sharing my reading and getting recommendations from other readers. I read for work, I read for pleasure, I live to read!
My favourite authors are: Jane Austen, Annie Proulx, Ray Bradbury, Anthony Horowitz, William Thackeray, Meg Rosoff, Charles Dickens, Margaret Atwood oh and so many others. My tastes are varied and eclectic; I especially love dystopia, world lit, YA and 'weird': anything different is worth a try - even if I don't enjoy a book I still love comparing notes on it with other readers.
