    Happy Belated Birthday, Comedian!

    And interview with The Comedian:

*Why are we doing this interview thing?*
Because it's fun; people like to read them, and, honestly, people like to write about themselves. And I'm a people too.

    *So, how old are you?*
Old enough to wave good-bye to 36. That's for damn sure.

*If you had a personal theme song what would it be?*
This one seems about right: Hand on the Wheel

*Are you male or female? *
I'm one rib short of bein' female.

*If you owned the site, what would you change?
    *

I'd make the individual authors section more prominent, make an "author of the month" from said section so as to better spotlight and promote discussion of historical literary authors, and I'd also make sub-forms for individual literary theories. . . all these might help to encourage more literary discussion.

*What was the inspiration for your LitNet username? And if you could change it today, what would you pick?*
I selected my user name after a character from Moore/Gibbon's Watchmen graphic novel. He's my favorite character in that novel because (a) he dies before page 1, (b) his death the the glue of a far more significant plot, (c) we never really know who he is because his "story" is told entirely through flashback/memories of other unreliable characters, and (d) he wears a silly costume.

    *Which countries have you visited?*
U.S., Canada, Mexico, England, Greece, Italy, Netherlands

    *Which languages do you speak?*
    English

*If you could live somewhere different, where would it be and why?*
For me, living well means loving where you are and what you're doing. So, I have no desire to live anywhere else. But if I did move, I'm sure that place would be great too. . . .unless it had tall buildings, a metro, countless Starbucks, and parking lots. If it had all of those things, then I'm sure it would suck.

    *Do you have any pets?*
Yep. Four fish and two rats. My kids named the rats Vanilla and Smokey.

    *What makes you happy?*
Lots of things: emptying the dishwasher each morning, cooking fancy French food, watching football, splitting a cord of oak with my dad's splittin' maul, a jarring breath of -10 (f) air when starting my run, talking with my students about proper comma use, helping my daughter with her math homework, reading a good book while on the toilet, a cold Pabst, the sudden pull of a fish on the line, my wife's laugh and that crinkle-nose thing she does when she pretends not to like something that I do (like having an occasional cigar). . . .and so on.

*Do you feel comfortable in your walk with God/atheism? *
    Sometimes. Sometimes not.

    Who is your favorite Beatle?
A great question! By "Beatle" I can only assume the question requests one's favorite of the order of Coleoptera and that the "a" in the word is an understandable misspelling for "Beetle". My current favorite is the Lethocerus uhleri seen here: . They sometimes get in my minnow traps (I use the minnows for bait) and they pack quite a nasty bite. Love those guys!

*How do you like your coffee? *
    Straight up, baby.

*Given the option, what animal would you choose to be?*
A black-caped chickadee:. Why? Because they are the toughest creature in the woods -- they're about the size of your thumb, sleep all the deadly -30 (f) night in a spruce tree with nothing but a thin layer of fat and feathers to protect them and wake up singing. If that ain't tough, I don't know what is.

What did you want to be when you grew up?
    A fish and game officer/biologist.

*What's the biggest fish you've ever caught?*
An 18 lb Northern Pike. I have more pictures of that thing than I do of my kids.

*What makes you feel great about yourself?*
That fish and my pictures of it. . . . .Oh, and my wife and kids too.

*How did you meet your significant other?*
In graduate school. She was on a date with another guy. And her next date? Two thumbs pointin' at this guy.

*What are you naturally good at? (Skills, abilities, gifts etc.)*
Taking out the trash without being asked, making a mean pot of coffee, unjustly mocking the ideas of others while equally unjustly supporting my own groundless opinions, catchin' smallmouths on the river, stern-ing a canoe, and "body-slamming" my kids on the couch in a cacophony of dramatic play. . .and so on.

*What is the one thing you must do before you die?*
    Can't think of one.

*What would you regret not fully doing, being or having in your life?*
I'd regret not having a family.

*If you were to be stuck at a particular time in your life, which one would you choose and why?*
I'd be stuck in the present, for sure. Always.

*Do you get tired living life?*
    Sometimes.

*What one thing would you NEED to have on a deserted island if you didn't have to worry over food and water? *
    A fishin' pole.

*If you were a king/queen for a day, what would you do?*
Ah! Here's what I'd do: I'd go to a remote corner of the woods near my house; I'd tell no one where I was going, and I'd be sure to cover my tracks so no one could follow me. Then, I'd read Walden and "wait out" that odious appointment until that horrible 24-hour curse had passed, then I'd come back home and keep on livin' life as normal.

*What’s the stupidest forum argument you’ve ever had?*
I know most people here, rightly, nominate the arguments in the religious section. But I find discussions of "gender" to be wearisome.

*What song is in your head at the moment?*
    In a Nutshell, this.

*Which book are you reading at the moment?*
    Ruth Hall by Fanny Fern

    *What is your favourite quote?*
"None is so poor that he needs sit on a pumpkin. That is shiftlessness" H.D.Thoreau in Walden

    *Favorite avatar on the Forum?*
    Silas Thorne's cane.

    *Favorite threads?*
"Nature writing", "Poetry Discussion group" and some of the forum games.

    What's your favorite sandwich?
    Grilled cheese.

*What is your answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything?*?
    That's a stupid question.

Who are some of the nicest people you met on LitNet?
Qimi, Scher (that is, when she takes that iron fist out of her velvet glove ), papaya, Buh4Bee, Silas, Neely, Mutatis. . .

    *Favorite poem?*
    "Intimations: Ode to Immortality"

*First novel you remember reading on your own?*
Probably a Terry Brooks fantasy novel.

*What era do you find most of the books you read are from?*
    19th century

    *Favorite TV show?*
    Northern Exposure

*Which Forum members would you like to meet in person?*
All of those that I listed in the "nice" category. But nice isn't everything, I'd have fun meeting a few of less-than-nice Litnet people too.

*Last words you said out loud?*
    "See ya."

    *Last person you hugged/kissed?*
    Mrs. Comedian

*What do you do (for a living) to be able to keep your LitNet addiction going? And are you happy with your chosen profession?*
    I profess for cash.

*What is your most outstanding feature?*
Well, I'm short and skinny, so probably one of those two.

*What book would you recommend to others of all types and ages as a must read?*
    Walden.

    *Describe your ideal day, please.*
Wake up, make some coffee, chat with the Mrs., wake up the kids, go to work, learn somethin' from the students, pick up kids, play, Pabst #1, chat with the Mrs., family dinner, help clean up, Pabst #2, play with kids, spend evening with the Mrs, sleep.

    *Favorite movie?*
    Off the Map

    *Last movie you watched?
    The Muppet Movie

    *Favorite painting?*
I like painting with water in them, so here's one that I'll call my favorite for now by Frederick Edwin Church:

*Something you want to forget but you never can?*
That HORRIBLE Thanksgiving dinner many years ago. *shutters*

What is the best thing that happened to you since your last birthday?
Staying employed. . . . times are tough out there for educators. We're evil, sloven, and unmotivated. . .so I hear.

*Are you mostly happy with life or are you still in pursuit?*
    Happy.

Tell us something scandalous about yourself.
    Let's see. . . . . I used to smoke cigarettes.

*How long did it take you to answer all of these questions?* A long time

    Are you currently intoxicated?
    Nope.

*One final word of wisdom for LitNet users?*
LitNetters without avatars. . .have something to hide. Think on that. . . *insert pensive chin rubbing here*

I know that I should feel indignant that something that I've mentioned has been referenced on this same question in two surveys now (the first one was my argument with SLG about noise restriction), but I can't bring myself to feel anything but a sort of queer smugness.

    Happy Belated, Comedian!
I sang of leaves, of leaves of gold, and leaves of gold there grew.
