I wasn't surprised by Tim Howard, but I was surprised by the U.S. midfield. England is gonna have to do better against athletic midfielders and speedy forwards, when they meet some of the other favored teams.

Slovenia - Win (4 coins)

Ghana - Win (4 coins)

Yes we had the better game but it doesn't count for much in the end.

Yes he links up well and wins the headers, but as a forward option he just isn't one. As a forward you are going to be in a position once or twice in a game when you get a chance and this is where he is the problem because he is physically unable to convert chances. At the one-on-one he couldn't have hit the keeper's chest better if he had a target on it, he is a liability. Much better, I think to push Rooney in that forward position and to sit someone like Joe Cole in behind. Rooney tends to sit too deep because he looks to create as he did today, but we want Rooney forward in that danger area and that didn't happen enough today.

Sure but we are several bricks short and that's the problem.

Armchair expert signing off; I need a shower (no hot water for a bath the boiler has packed in...damn)

Ok so we're not going to win it!
I'm a Heskey fan and have been for years because defenders hate to play against him, he's big and strong and knocks them over. We just haveN't got a Shearer Owen Lineker anymore.

LitNetIsGreat

I didn't think either team was that good. From what I saw earlier in the day, Argentina and possibly even Nigeria could beat either of those teams handily.

Argentina definitely, they looked quietly comfortable and should have scored a lot more, but Nigeria no, I'd be happy with facing them.

Aha! So your the sole Heskey fan are you? I thought they must have been one. I agree he is a handful and wins everything in the air but he just does, not, score. :banghead:

Tough call the first game for me, could be anything and hard to predict. Both poor sides but Slovenia have slightly more on paper, though that might not count for much. As I have put a little money on Algeria to finish rock bottom in this group (1.83) with Germany and Brazil to win the group, I'll punt a little on Slovenia, so I will go a cautious 4 Zlotty.

Slovenian win 4 Zlotty (I've exchanged the Gogols because they are not giving me any luck.) I'll post my thoughts on the other games later, just need a little more research on these teams first.

South Africa ponders vuvuzela ban after complaints

South Africa's World Cup organising chief Danny Jordaan may ban vuvuzelas from inside stadiums after complaints from broadcasters and supporters.

The constant sound of the high-pitched horn-like instrument has so far drowned out any of the atmosphere-generating singing usually associated with games. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/world_cup_2010/8737455.stm

Oh, let's hope so, FIFA was aware of this before and could/should have banned them from the start. One of their reasons for not doing so was the claim that the vuvuzelas things are "part of the African heritage" apparently, what mass produced plastic trumpets?

Wait for the big boys, Brazil and Spain!!! Spain will be awesome in this world cup.

Serbia a big disappointment for me, a lot of people had them as hot dark horses, but on that performance they are nothing at all, over cautious, set piece hopefuls with no creativity. Ghana much more energy and commitment and deserved to win, plus what a stupid hand ball for the sending off.

Putting 10 Zlottys on Germany. I think this will be a little closer than a lot of people expect, but I'm backing the German win. Australia will pack midfield and defend deep, but I think Germany will have too much for them and break them down. Presently looking at odds for a 2-0, might have a pop at that if good enough.

That first goal (Germans v. Australia) looked offsides. Here in the U.S., I think they reviewed it on the broadcast just once, but without the special off-sides-shading graphics that they usually use. It looked off-sides to me, but the announcers stayed away from discussion of it after that one look at it.

I might have missed something (my attention is a bit divided). Did I just see things wrong in that one replay?

LitNetIsGreat
06-13-2010, 03:19 PM
I've not noticed any comments about off-side, I don't think it was.

It must be said the Germans look very good, by far the best team performance of the world cup so far. Their odds to win the world cup have dropped from 15 to 11.5 on that half alone. (I managed to get a couple of quid on after 1-0 at 14 so I am happy about that.)

I was hoping they would ban them from the start as well...they are just way too loud and distracting (sounds like a hive of angry bees to me). Worst of all they can actually harm your hearing. In my opinion vuvuzelas completely ruin the atmosphere too.

As for it being African heritage, well, that's bull. As far as I know it only became popular in the nineties or there abouts. So the vuvuzela is not to African heritage what curries are to Indian heritage for example...honestly... I watched a rugby game (on t.v.), held at one of the new stadiums right before the world cup started, and it was horrible. I felt sorry for the players, and you could hardly hear the commentators. The ref wanted to talk to the t.v. ref about a try, but he couldn't hear a thing over the noise. So I hope they ban it...and I don't feel like a traitor for saying it either :D

So...
Netherlands win - 10 muntstukke
Cameroon win - 5 muntstukke

I've caught about half of both matches today (as I have been forced off of the settee to do that work thing:sad:) and I think the Dutch were OK but nothing special, but like Paul says perhaps they are saving a bit. For personal finanical reasons though I'm glad to see a bit of a lackluster performance as I'm hoping for Brazil and Spain to really shine.

A Very good result from Japan today, perhaps the shock of the tournament so far on paper at least.

I think the Italy game will be tight, and although I suspect Italy might just shade the match, I am going to go for a draw with minor stakes as I am certainly not risking too much on an Italian win as they naturally start slow, so:

Italy Paraguay draw 4 Dantes.

I stayed up. And feeling it this morning. Tough to watch the game with Russian announcers. They have absolutely no emotion in calling the game. Plus the language makes me miss things. I didn't realize Italy took Buffon out after half time until this morning.

I thought Italy actually played well, especially in the mid field. They seemed to have the best passing game of anyone I've seen so far. They had trouble pushing it into attack situations, but then Paraguay played very good defense. The rain conditions seemed to help Paraguay too.

Most major teams have caused disappointment so far (apart from Germany); hope Brazil won't be one of those.

Why? It's all about risk. Bill risked early and went out - and that's the downside to a bet that would have put him at a huge advantage had he won. Seems fair to me.

Oh really? I didn't know that is was used in Britain as well. I shold look upo the etymology of it. Ok, I just did and it's fascinating. Here:

“Soccer’s etymology is not American but British,” explains Partha Mazumdar of the U.S. Embassy in London. “It comes from an abbreviation for Association Football, the official name of the sport (for those of you who have never heard the team “Association Football” before, it was named after the Football Association, which still governs English soccer, to differentiate itself from the other major type of football, Rugby Football, which was named after the Rugby School. FIFA, the world governing body of soccer, is French for the International Federation of Association Football… F-I-F-A).”

He continues, “For obvious reasons, in the 1880s and 1890s, English newspapers couldn’t use the first three letters of Association as an abbreviation in their pages, so they took the next syllable, S-O-C. With the British penchant for adding “-er” at the end of words: punter, footballer, copper, and, of course, nicknaming rugby, “rugger,” the word “soccer” was soon born, over a hundred years ago, here in England, the home of soccer. We adopted it and kept using it because we have our own indigenous sport that we call football.”

Still don’t like the word soccer? Blame the British, not us Yanks.

I don't mind the word Soccer at all. BUT why do you Americans call a game of throw and catch, football?

Virgil

I don't mind the word Soccer at all. BUT why do you Americans call a game of throw and catch, football?

That's a good question. The game has evolved to where it's predominantly a throw, catch, and run sport, but the original play involved more kicking than it does today. There's kicking in the game (kick offs, punts, field goal, extra points), but not as much as say a hundred years ago.

This gives you a little history but it doesn't say how kicking was more integral to the earlier game: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_football.

I guess this may explain the "football" aspect better: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Why_is_American_football_called_'football'

billl
06-16-2010, 03:00 AM
Virgil's wiki-answers link looks like a pretty rational explanation--I had never thought about it before...

this link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forward_pass#History) might put the role of "passing" into historical perspective--it had been, originally, an illegal play (or at least, one not addressed by the rules or something...). The game was just about running before that, with the occasional kick (I believe)--something like rugby, I imagine, but with stopping and planning about how to achieve a score, as well as how to reach an intermediary (and ongoing) sub-aim of advancing the ball 10 yards or more in four 'plays' or less.

EDIT further research reveals that, originally, the numbers were a bit different for those things. But who cares? We aren't here to discuss football--this thread is about SOCCER! :thumbs_up Sorry!

I think that game is the general theme of the world cup so far. If you stack the defensive box and you play physical, hard nosed defense, then you can match up with the very best. Paraguay, Uruguay, S. Korea, N.Korea, and now Switzerland. They all over achieved with it. It may not make for the most exciting football, but it levels the field and if you get a little lucky, like the Swiss, you might just pull it off.

Hmm, tough matches tomorrow. I don't know where my Dudeck Mclosco’s are going as yet. Can you bet on a snoozefest with the Greek match? :yawnb::yawnb::yawnb:

Following the betting on the betting forums, a lot of people lost a lot of money on the Spanish match, though some regained a little on Uruguay. Of course though, it may be something losing 5/10 grand on Spain, as some I "spoke" to have, but do they know that I lost 80 or (85 paellas) on the same game? I doubt it. Do they realise the pain I feel being thrashed by Sch at this stage? No. So they should be thankful that they have only lost 5/10 grand then really. :nopity:

I expect the tournament to pick up from now, being into the group second stages as per tonight, as let's be honest it has been slow, (slow but still fun).

I can't believe that I am at that evil place tomorrow instead of sitting with a beer watching the Arg Vs SK match, which should be a good one. If I had my way everything, apart from beer and sausage production, would stop for the World Cup. Damn it all...the only thing that matters is beer and football. Oh no, I'm just a listener/spectator, I'm off to the big city, London, to see Figaro! :drool5: With the racing, I'm off to the races, York races, we go every year with work, for a bit of general drinking in the sun and a few bets here and there - it's all good stuff and it means that the holidays are around the corner too which is even better!!!

I fancy France, but I'm not sure of the stake yet.

Scotland won't win it anyway. Germany look sharp although that was not a true test. It'll be hard to score against Brazil. The Spanish and English have been dealt big blows to their egos. Argentina are just warming up but they'll have to get into top gear by next game. The other South American teams look good. Ok I'll plump for the Dutch getting into the semi finals and that is as much as I'll say. Cow-ard!

Yes, I've had a few quid on no African team to progress from the groups at good odds for interest, so I'm hoping they continue to flop somewhat. Ghana are the main threats though.

I think that France will play better tonight and expose Mexico as fluent, but over-rated, so I'm going for a French win staking 20.

France were truly awful, obviously all the stories about in-fighting are true then, it was clear that they don't care and can't play as a team and hate each other. The thinking is that the "manager" didn't play Gourcouff because the other players don't like him, they don't talk to him or sit with him at meal times and refuse to pass to him. What a pathetic bunch of babies, bye, bye.

Allez les Blues (they've gone)

If any one has any coin left, put Everything on a draw between Mexico and Uruguay next week. Its a sporting gold-plated cert!

I'm already on it in a way. It's the lowest price I've ever seen for a draw 4/5, I've laid it at that price, but backed a 0-0, the thinking is that if it is 0-0, I get my money back, but if someone scores I'll make a little. Either way a draw is good enough for these to go through so they'll make sure that they do just that. The only thing is that none of these teams will really want to finish second and play Argentina if they can help it.

France were poor considering the talent they've got. i wonder why he didn't bring Henry on?

Yes Mexico deserved the win. I think Henry is another one that the manager doesn't like, so no chance there. Notice how he just walked straight off down the tunnel and the reaction of the other players, it is clear that nobody cares in that team. Hopeless pathetic bunch.

Probably true, but I don't like it. I know I'm a bit of a boy-scout about this kind of thing, but I don't think it's fair to settle for a mutually-advantageous draw. I think they should play to win - play up and play the game, and all that bally rot.

To be fair, he deserves his place more than Rooney does after the USA match. I'd pick Robert Green as well.

The new ball is making good players look like clodhoppers. I cant recall seeing so many over hit passes and shots going high and wide. Has there been a goal direct from a free kick on the edge of the area yet? It is usually a feature of the World Cup.

Germany of course, prepared for this and have been using the ball in their league.

Well, there was no offsides, that was for sure. There was some pushing and shoving, probably four or fives cases of it, but if anyone was fouling, it looked like a Slovenian (or two) would've been the ones to get called for it. The U.S. announcers and post-game analysts saw nothing, and the ref has so far refused to explain what the foul was.

Yeah, I had the draw. The problem with England is (and has been for the last 12 years since Gazza left the team) they have no one in the middle of the park who can put his foot on the ball and make good creative passes. Lampard and Gerard are good players but they are not creators - they are energy players who can get forward from midfield to run on to knock downs from headers and fire shots from the edge of the area, but neither are creators of the likes of Fabregas, van der vaart, xavi, who can spot where the ball should go and actually get it there. Barry is a defensive midfielder who makes short simple passes ("water carrier" anyone?)

They played a great second half. They don't seem as large as some of the other teams, but they seem very quick. That referee has to answer some questions.

They've done relatively well in the second half in both games I've seen. The first half.... That's a bit of an embarassment, but come one. They're holding their own and when we think of footbal as American Football, not soccer, not half bad I suppose :D

I was expecting a lot better from England, only Gerrard was trying to create chances for his team while rest of the team was invisible.

Wow, I'm nealy wiped out. Back to back o for 3 days. Should I bet it all on one game or divide it? Problem is that none of today's three seem like sure things. What exactly is a sure thing in this world cup?

I bet on sure things and was wiped out in the first week.!

Aside from the football, it is entertaining watching neely embarking upon the slippery slope of virtual debt and ruination. I see a cautionary tale emerging.

Hey there, newbie. It is the exclamation point at the end that really stings, and it just keeps on stinging as the days pass. Hardly necessary.

Neely early on offered to lend me some of his riches, btw. Imagine how I could have leveraged my suffering with that... For the record, I'd just like everyone to know: I am the only one that has managed perfection in making wrong predictions. Just me.

Think it's easy?

Maybe the moderator can be so kind as to give every one 50 additional coins across the board, including those out, and maybe we can all continue to play?
