Tree of Life does look interesting, but 2001 bored me silly, and I finally gave up on it two hours in. Is it possible to say what Tree does well without spoilers?
It's somewhat difficult to describe. While I think that this film is relatable to everyone, I think that everyone will experience it slightly differently. I was not bored with 2001, so in all honesty, you may be bored with moments of this. On the other hand, this has a much more human story attached to the wonder and strangeness of the universe, and though it is long, it isn't as long as 2001. There is very little dialogue, but the actors deliver phenomenal performances.
There are scenes that take the viewer along the path of evolution. In high quality cinematography, with shots and effects that seem impossible to have captured for the screen. It is rich with a modern classical score. Unlike 2001, I felt deep empathy for all involved. It's a story of family, childhood, and the memories which become exaggerated in a child's mind. The emotion of it sneaks up on the viewer.
Just after the film I thought "Wow, that was a very agnostic movie, or even atheist," but Terrence Malick is Christian, and I could understand Christians taking the science of this story and calling it God. To sum up, this is a film about the earthling experience. I can't do it justice with my review.
From the director of "Badlands," "The Thin Red Line," and "The New World." If any of you should see it, drop me a line and let me know what you thought/felt.

Thanks to Neely for the trailer too. That's a pretty good trailer. The film is destined to be a classic. Movies like this are rarely made in this era of cheap garbage "art." I forgot to mention that it's so much about the importance of love, and the need for it to sustain us.

I think the "human story," as you put it, is what makes the difference. The reason I gave up on 2001 is that after two hours, I realized that I still didn't care about anything that was happening or any of the characters.
Tarkovsky's Solaris, on the other hand, is also long and slow, but involves things happening to real people and their reactions. I'd happily watch that movie again.
So thanks for the clarification. I'll have to check it out now.

For one frightful moment I thought the Americans had, in their desperation to find anything original, got hold of the funniest novel in the English language: Scoop by Evelyn Waugh. Having checked it out, I find that it is only the title that is the same. Gott sei Dank as they say in the fatherland.

Oh no, it's just the title. It's a top film though, full of typical Woody Allen humour all the way - I believe that it is the last film he has acted in as well. Watch the trailer, I'm sure you will be putting it on your Amazon wish list:

I also saw this movie earlier this summer and adored it. I've seen Badlands and Days of Heaven (one of my favorite movies; you won't find one more beautiful, except maybe this one), and who would have thought so many years later he could make one as defining as this one? Like 2001 we will be watching this one and wondering, "Where are you?" and "What am I doing here?" along with Jack.
Interestingly, Malick lived for a time as a youth in my hometown, and apparently his parents till live there. I never knew him, but watching this movie was like watching my own childhood unfold, including a difficult parent, a loving parent (mine was wrapped up in one), the death of a sibling, and on a more universal level, the dead on description of the landscape of childhood, both internal and external. Eerie and wondrous.
Varrenne, I think it's interesting that you perceived Malick as an atheist. For myself I saw at least a nod to a supreme being, the part that has to do with wonder and awe and seeking.

No I wasn't that keen on A History of Violence, I thought from the start it wasn't up to much, never mind.
Going to try An Education next. It's a story set in 60s England of a girl going to Oxford and then meeting an older man and wondering whether to give it all up for Paris and adventure. Coming of age stuff, etc, etc. Fancied it awhile back but never got around to it. I'll give it a go.

Captain America, I really liked it a lot. To be fair he may be the superhero I know the least about but this movie was good. I thought it was really cool that we met Mr. Stark and Hugo Weaving is always good!! Romance was a little bit to much for my taste, about one kiss to much... but everything else was great and I can't wait for Joss Whedons Avengers!!!

I just finished watching The Hobbit, the 1977 cartoon. It was actually a pretty good cartoon, with some pretty big name actors (Richard Boon for one!!)
I would have to give it a 7 out of 10. It was pretty good, but it did take some creative liberties. Some scenes from the book were altered, and some left out entirely, but in the end it was pretty enjoyable... however, you have to really be in the mood for it, the soundtrack can be a bit odd ;)
The Rise of the Planet of the Apes - I thought it was very good; quite an emotional film but I think it ended too soon, in a way. 7.5/10

I just finished watching Tucker & Dale VS Evil. 8/10 What a brilliant gory horror-comedy. Its a Canadian made movie (filmed in Edmonton and Calgary) with a humorous take on the cliche of college kids stuck in the woods with a couple of 'evil' hillbillies.
Well worth watching, but not for kids, I'm pretty sure it got an R rating for blood and gore. If you can stand the gore its pretty much laughs beginning to end.

I did the same with "Mr Brooks" the other day, rubbish.

Loved Hedwig, both on stage and the movie. Excellent score.
Last movie I saw was Conviction, which I watched on hbo. Great true life exoneration of wrongly convicted man story but not a great treatment of it. I kept thinking that, in terms of script, tone, sophistication and direction, hbo itself would have likely done a much better job, per their usual yen for assembling writing and directing talent and for emphasizing character and overcoming the pitfalls of hackneyed Hollywood formula, than the movie did. A good cast, for sure, but only Minnie Driver in a supporting role truly scored, with the script giving her something slightly beyond the generic to work with.
Still, for the story, and for the chance to see a first rate cast - Swank, Rockwell, Driver, Juliette Lewis and Melissa Leo in small but momentous gigs - worthwhile.

The problem about that film is that it's essentially a bad Luc Besson (he wrote Columbiana too though) knock off. Leon the Professional and La Femme Nikita are better movies that are very similar, if you haven't seen them before.

Contagion. Good, not great. Standout performance by the always terrific Jennifer Ehle. No single storyline works well enough, together they keep your attention and build an evocative enough fabric while the movie lasts. In retro, the whole proves no greater than the sum of its parts.

It's pretty melancholic and minimalistic, but it can ring true to alot of people. A story about two old friends who meet up again after not seeing each other in quite a few years. He's no great actor, I admit, but he's good at what he does, and he's made more than a few good movies: the first three Die Hards (I enjoyed the fourth, but it just wasn't as good as the first three), Sin City, Unbreakable, The Sixth Sense, The Fifth Element, Mercury Rising, The Jackal, and he was especially good in 12 Monkeys.

I adored this film. I was glad they ended it where they did.
"Drive" 9/10. This movie far exceeded my expectations. I was thinking it was going to be some sort of "Fast & Furious" garbage nonsense action movie. It was not at all. Very fantastic cinema. Not a chase movie. I would compare it to "Heat" but with a young 80s feel. The cinematography is excellent. The acting is stellar all around. The movie doesn't really do the expected thing throughout. The soundtrack is sexy and outstanding; some of it indie 80s, a lot of it new indie experimental. You'll want to download it and play it over and over.
To me it's about a young man alone who finds purpose. Great work from Ryan Gosling (and I've never seen the notebook), Albert Brooks, Ron Perlman, the whole cast. I'm only giving it a 9/10 because I have to see it again to judge whether I can put it up there with something life changing like "2001: A Space Odyssey", or "The Thin Red Line", or "Mulholland Drive". It could certainly be ranked at the level of "No Country For Old Men" or a number of Coen bros movies.

Last new movie I saw was Real Steel in theaters. I thought it was quite good - somewhat predictable and corny, but it's a sports movie, so that's pretty much par for the course. Hugh Jackman's a joy to watch, and the spectacle of seeing robots boxing matters quite a lot, as well.

I watched an Italian made (English language) movie called "City of the Living Dead" and also known as "The Gates of Hell." 2/10. It's a Lucio Fulci picture. Those of you familiar with Fulci's films probably know that he completely ignores plot. All of the work and attention went to gore. The gore was amazing, but every other scene was completely incoherent, worthless, and disconnected; with random characters doing confusing things. It all had very little to do with living dead. At one point a man threw a blowup doll into a room and it instantly self inflated. He then caressed it and the scene abruptly ended, never to be brought up again or explained.
This movie got 2 points for a woman realistically vomiting all of her vital organs and intestines. If you have the patience to sit through it, you will finish it feeling ashamed and embarassed for everyone involved.

I saw a few of his movies back during his '80s heyday. Gates of Hell is probably the worst, although New York Ripper was pretty awful too. House by the Cemetary is better, because he at least tries for atmosphere, though he still couldn't manage coherence. Zombie is probably his best; that one gave me nightmares, probably due to the realistic-looking zombies and the ultra-grim, humorless approach he took. Well, except for the underwater zombie vs. shark fight, but that was awesome.

Wow. It's amazing you should say that. Someone was just telling me "Zombie" was his best, and that he intended for it to be like a loosely connected sequel to Romero's "Dawn of the Dead." I've also heard it called "Zombie 2" for reasons unknown to me. I can't wait to watch it. I'm told the shark fight is really something else. I'm impressed by your movie knowledge, Calidore.

The Ides of March.
Good movies about politics are unusual, maybe I think that because I compare everything to The West Wing, but this one I really enjoyed.
It was focused on dialogs and didn’t have to use phony car chases etc to get thrilling. The Ides of March show how power always tends to corrupt and I think Nietzsche was right that driving force in humans, all our achievements and ambition, the striving to reach the highest possible position in life, are all manifestations of the will to power.

A Certain Smile, on YouTube.
A very romantic version of a romantic novel by Francoise Sagan. Very picturesque scenes of Paris and the south if France with elegant people in luxurious surroundings. Directed by Jean Negalescu, everyone's favourite glossy film maker, it's the perfect picture for women and sentimentalists; who are not necessarily one and the same thing. I had seen it before but watching it again was very enjoyable. With not a baseball cap in sight, it beats the phony, juvenile nihilistic, pseudo Freudian angst-ridden rubbish of today by a mile.

It wanted to be Moulin Rouge. It had a lot of drag queens. I like drag queens, but these weren't good drag queens. One was Christina Aguilera(sc).
It was stupid and sexless. High School Musical III meets G-rated Showgirls meets the Sex & the City movie plus All That Jazz. I'm sure it's perfect if you're the kind of woman who likes this sort of thing.

^Haha!
I caught The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (original Swedish version) last night which I thought to be good and bad in equal measure. There was a guessing element to the whodunnit plot and I kept guessing wrong (which is apparently how these things operate), though the denouement I found obvious and weak (and expected it from the beginning - maybe you'll be taken in by the words used to throw the reader/watcher, but alas, not me).
There were slow ponderous parts that might have been better suited to a slow ponderous avante garde experience - these seemed to fumble for a foothold, and gave me the feeling the author hadn't really thought it through (only afterward did I discover it was based on an entire trilogy of novels, so perhaps this was the reason for its length, but sections could have been cut considerably. Also I'm not a native Swedish speaker, so to an extent I forced myself to the screen and subtitles (I'm trying not to subtract points for that).
Was it gripping? Sort of - just not rivetting. There needed to be more concern for the characters, and they largely played as marionettes in a puppet show. The locale, which I must hasten is Sweden and probably the setting, were without exception bleak - though I wasn't expecting a happy comedy - but it's a film, and there could have easily been license for climatic variation: Summer always took place in memory/the past, Winter in the here and now.
There is something to be said about the actual 'physical appearance' of the actors - it was Andy Warhol who said that real people just don't look like Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. When something happens in real life it happens to people of little consequence, and a well-chosen cast should reflect this.
I think they got that right - they were believable even though not likeable.
There were novelistic aspects left in which was a good touch, and at moments made me wish I had the book next to me to compare how that bit was written, or this bit. And overall it seemed to succeed as a translation from page to screen, though I haven't read the page.
All up it gets 7/10 (even though one point is out of sympathy/disregarding the subtitle hassle, it is definitely better than a 6)

Well it's 2012 now so I'm just going to list and rank my 10 favourite films of 2011.
10. War Horse - 6.5/10 The movie is very well made, but the corny plot makes it a bit too cloying at times.
9. 13 Assassins 7/10, Takashi Miike is a guilty pleasure of mine.
8. Super 8 - 7/10, a good children's film that captures much of the wonder of an E.T. or the Goonies, but falls apart at the end when it becomes a formulaic action film for the last 30 minutes.
7. Midnight in Paris - 7/10, a middle of the pack Woody Allen film.
6. The Artist - 7.5/10, a good film that is endearing because of its concept. Strong ending and good performances throughout, but has moments where it was a bit dull for me.
5. 50/50 - 8/10, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is my celebrity crush.
4. Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy - 8/10, Gary Oldman is great in this movie.
3. Drive, 8/10 has a real Cronenberg vibe to it.
2. Tree of Life, 8.5/10 I have mixed feelings about this, but some parts of it are transcendent.
1. Hugo, 9/10 an ambitious children's movie about cinema itself essentially. It's just great.

Alice in Wonderland (Tim Burton). 6/10. I love the Alice characters. I give this movie a 6 for the art, mainly. I did like the art, but the whole movie is kind of washed in a bleak gray/blue/black. I don't think it was necessary. Rather than making it a darker tale, it made it somewhat monotonous. The Hatter and the dog characters were endearing. The actress for Alice was quite good. I found the rabbits a bit difficult to look at. I thought the Cheshire cat was cute, but missing his somewhat sinister charm.
The story is simple. It had so much potential but it left me imagining how they could have improved it. It fell apart in the second half. The jabberwocky was decidedly unscary, in some really bad CGI. The ending was a dud.
I'll still rewatch this movie for the lovely first 45 minutes.

The Beaver (Mel Gibson) - I'll give it a 6/10. It was very thought provoking, but gave little for entertainment. It started rather slow and never quite picked up. One thing that was very realistic, it portrayed life in a manner as such that life's problems will never be fully solved. We can address the issues in a positive way, but unlike the finale in most movies, all the problems that each person had were still there. But each person started coping with them in a different way. Maybe I'll up it to a 7/10.

A River Runs Through It
An oldy but a goody - actually much goodier then I remembered it. Great landscape scenery frames a fairly soft brotherly tale, but this time around upon finding out it was based on a true story, the much better for it. A portrait of the author's brother over a period of six months after having not seen each other for years, ending in tragedy which is hardly touched upon, leaving his memory fresh and eternal.
It's really very good 9.5/10

Not a movie, but a documentary called What The Future Sounded Like, a history of British synthesizer development in the sixties. Quite interesting look at how Electronic Music Systems came into being, the AKS and VCS3. Also their powerful use in Dr Who via the BBC Radiophonic Workshop.
Great footage of a long-haired Brian Eno glammed up in Roxy Music, a look at Silver Machine and the origins of Hawkwind with comments from the band as they were only a few years ago.
Interesting was that back then computers were rare and one of the founders of EMS hocked his wife's tiara to get one (at the price of a house). It was so unusual that someone would want one for personal use that Tomorrow's World dedicated an episode on him and it. Enough memory to record a buzzing blowfly for half a second, and even performed something random on stage in front of an audience to mixed reviews, the music computer was here to stay.

A Dangerous Method - 2/5...I had high hopes for this movie, none of which were met. Viggo Mortenson delivered a great performance as Sigmund Freud, it's too bad that he was only in the movie for about 15 minutes. The rest was Keira Knightley screaming and Michael Fassbender showing us that Carl Jung isn't nearly interesting enough to deserve his own movie.

I just watched Breaking Dawn part 1. It was quite possibly the worst movie I have ever seen in my life.
The plot is already so incredibly awful, but I did enjoy the movies because I thought they were pretty and I liked the music. This one, however, was not even remotely interesting. I talked through the entire thing, making up my own lines to the really really tedious and bland storyline.
This is what happens when you try to milk the system by turning a perfectly normal one-part-plot into a two-part-movie. They had to drag everything out in order to stretch it into two movies. The fourth book could have easily been done into one movie. Tip: DON'T make the wedding scene an entire half an hour. DON'T make the honeymoon scene another dreadfully boring half an hour where all they do is play chess, not have sex, and swim in the ocean.
Part of me has always sort of enjoyed the movies for the scenery and stuff but I guess as time goes on, I'm realizing what a complete load of crap Twilight is, and I don't even want to be around it anymore. It's marketed towards the most cliche, ridiculous 13 year old girls who think that romance is a love triangle between two (arguably) hot men who risk their lives daily to keep them safe and that the entire world revolves around them and their "uniqueness" compared to the insignificance of every other girl. Complete trash. It's turning young girls into idiots who think life falls apart if their boyfriend leaves them and to expect fairy tale romance when that doesn't even exist. I'm so over teenage romance expectations. They're in for a big disappointment.

I agree that the Twilight movies are horrible. I watched them strictly for MST3K type purposes, like for mocking and hilarity. If they're viewed as comedies, they're actually somewhat good. Haha. Actually, no. No, they are not.

Yes that's exactly what happens, but prior to her departure she arrives in back in Hong Kong, older and wiser, and sees Charles Townsend for what he really is. On her return to London, she finds that her mother has died and leaves with her father for the Bahamas where he has been offered a government post.

I actually saw a bit of it in a preview on TV just before it came out. It got very good reviews and it looked quite authentic but fell into the trap, common nowadays, of having everyone parading around in spotless costume which should have been a little less so given the period and especially the location.
A version made during the 1930s, of which I have also seen an extract, was very good on costume but had the ridiculous Hollywood idea of starring Greta Garbo in the lead role: a woman who was just about as far removed from the character in the book as it is possible to get.

It was just bad bad and more bad. Absolutely nothing interesting happened.
However, it did provide a few inside jokes between my parents and I. "Jacob imprinted" is now a favorite new phrase for "Jacob just **** himself." (I kid you not. The way Edward says it, after Jacob jumps off the porch, made our entire living room laugh outloud. Each of us was thinking the same thing.)
However, hands down, this has got to have been the icing on the cake. This is possibly the worst scene in the movie:

Birth of a Nation, D. W. Griffith's 1915 adaptation of Thomas Dixon's novel The Clansman, Doublleday, Page & Co., 1906.
The novel was the second novel of Dixon's Klan triolgy, The Leopard's Spots, The Clansman, and The Traitor.. Dixon's idolized uncle was a Klan chieftan, and the novel and movie were the most controversial in our history for glorifying the Klan. The novel and movie were credited with the revival of the Klan in 1915. Our images of the Klan with white robes, pointy hats, and burning crosses originated with this movie and the novel. These icons were universal with the Second Ku Klux Klan of the 1920's. I watched this movie on You Tube for the historical interest, and was so taken that I bought the DVD at Barnes and Noble.
The movie is three hours long and was one of the very first spectaculars ever produced. It incorporated historically accurate reproductions of various scenes of the Civil War. Lillian Gish starred as Emily, and was a great actress--one who survived the conversion to talkies. The first sixty minutes are devoted to getting to know the two families, one Northern and one Southern, who play an important part throughout the movie. At sixty minutes, the Civil War begins, and most of the war scenery is developed around Sherman's march from Atlanta to the Sea. At 120 minutes the war ends with a memorable scene of Lincoln's assassination. The remainder of the movie is based on the era of Reconstruction.
The Klan is started, but never founded. In actual fact, the Klan was founded as a social club by six friends in Pulaski, TN. In the movie, the Klan is started by one man outraged by the actions of the Republicans and Scalawags. In a near final scene it rides like the cavalry, complete with appropriate music, to the rescue of our protagonist family's patriarch holed up in a cabin fighting of a Negro/Republican insurrection.

This is one of my favourite novels, how did they change the ending?
Spoiler Alert
I can't find my copy of the book, but I seem to remember that while Kitty did indeed change after they arrived in China, becoming less shallow and vain, she did not love Walter, although she did respect him and what he was doing. This was born out in how she chose to live her life when she returned to England (after meeting Charles Townsend one more time) by caring for her father and son in a caring and loving manner.
But the movie version has Walter Fane and Kittly fall in love. It's a sweeter, more bittersweet ending (and a bit more traditional, too). I didn't dislike it, it was just different.

X-Men: First Class. 8.5/10
Wowzers! Finally an X-Men movie I can really get into. Don't get me wrong, I had a passing interest in the other movies, but they strayed from the storylines quite a bit. The timeliness were off from the comic series. This is a much more cohesive film. I really wish this had been the first of them. I hope they'll continue with this cast and director. Brilliant. I only dropped it down from a 10 because I think even the best of super hero movies can't compare to things like "The Thin Red Line" or "Once Upon a Time in the West."
It was great to see Kevin Bacon in a roll that suits him again, and don't underestimate some of the emerging new actors. They do a good job. The origin stories are fascinating, inspiring. I think I'll be going to next year's Comic-con as Mystique.

People were rhapsodic about it when it released, but the sands of time have accorded it a more just place and now viewers new and old seem less emphatic in their praise. A.O. Scott saw this coming when he tacitly urged critics to pump their breaks a little back in 2005:

Today I watched the last 2/3 of Stardust, and it was an enjoyably irreverant take on fantasy films. I liked seeing De Niro in a role where he was perilously close to humiliation (as in so many of his roles in the last fifteen years), but ended up amusing in a most atypical fashion; still have to question Bobby's judgment in taking on the role in the first place though... Anyone sceptical about the film's merits should check out the bone-cracking fight between Michelle Pfeiffer and Mark Strong, provided your sensibilities aren't too fragile:

Friday night I was alone and was in the mood for some Austen so I watched both Mansfield Park and Northanger Abbey. They were both very enjoyable but I realized to my surprise that I haven't read NA so I decided to read it and found out I don't own it like I thought I did so I started MP instead and when I find NA I'll buy it.

Watched 'The Counterfeiters' on DVD last night.
A sombre, if sometimes ironically-funny, true story set in Sachsenhausen concentration camp during WWII. In German with English subtitles.
8/10 - the film is excellent. I've deducted a couple of notches due to the nuance/subtleties missed due to not understanding German.
Subtitles rarely give the full flavour.

Just finished re-watching the fantastic BBC 95 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice - marvellous!
There's going to be a viewing void tomorrow night. Mrs Neely suggests we fill it with North and South, another great adaptation. Yes it is period drama month in the Neely household (previous to those was Jane Eyre).

Revisited Blade Runner as the lad wanted to see it. I had forgotten most of it - I seem to remember that I was drunk - it was a long time ago - and so really enjoyed it. I think the film focused on the stronger parts of Dick's story. Good film - 8/10

Just saw Cabin in the woods. oh so very interesting! not as much horror as I expected and more funny than scary. loved the idea behind it and good actors in it. Drew Goddard is a good director, he and Joss Whedon wrote the script together and it has Whedon fingerprints all over it.
the title says it all, a very cool movie!

Last night we watched "The Iron Lady" which I am giving a 10 due to Maryl Streep's performance. She is truly a wonderful actress. The movie was very good, but she is what kept us riveted to the screen.

My favourite writer once said that time is so precious that there's a perverse delight in wasting it; so recently, I watched a piece of nonsense called Kiss Me Deadly which was total B******s.
Staying in the same mood, I am thinking that my next YouTube film will be a monumentally crass melodrama as only Hollywood could make 'em.
Once seen never forgotten no matter how hard one tries.

I certainly agree.
I enjoyed The Tourist and Horrible Bosses (saw it twice), but the following stand out in my mind as perhaps not a total waste of time and I'd give them a 10/10. They probably don't deserve that considering the average ratings on IMDb are around 6.

Because of the censorship inherent in political correctness, certain films that were once repeated on some TV stations have now been effectively banned but are still available on YouTube. Apart from some excellent films on YouTube, there are also many that will appeal to the connoisseur of cinematic kitsch. Among these is one that I watched recently called 'Staircase' that concerns two homosexual hairdressers who live above their shop in London. Directed, surprisingly, by Stanley Donen who excelled in musicals such as 'Singing in the Rain', it stars Richard Burton and Rex Harrison who give two of the most camp performances ever to blight the screen. There is no actual storyline but rather a series of vignettes in which both men try scoring points off each other with verbal *****iness.
Although the homosexuality is implied rather than explicitly presented, the 'plot' revolves around a court summons issued to the Rex Harrison character for wearing women's clothes in public and his fear of being exposed as homosexual.
Made in 1969, it seems a fitting end to a decade of silliness when the vox had never been so pop and remains so until this day.
On a scale of 0 - 10 it has gotta be zero.

He's done some crap films. We were very disappointed with Elf. All the funny bits were in the trailer.
Watched The Thin Red Line - Terence Malick's war film with poetry and philosophy thrown in. There are lots of lingering shots and scenes of soldiers crawling through grass, but I liked it. 8/10

I have just watched 'And God Created Woman' after a break of some time and, given that Brigitte Bardot had remained in the memory as an actress of mainly sexploitation films, was pleasantly surprised at just how good it is.
Performance wise, the film is held together by the German actor Curt Jurgens who speaks remarkably good French and has the gravitas to bring conviction to his role, but Bardot is also very good and in this film at least is one of the most naturally beautiful women in the history of cinema.
Unfortunately it was all downhill from then on when publicity replaced performance in a series of rip-offs in which she was in the same woman between two men scenario with the make-up becoming more liberally applied with successive films.
Roger Vadim directs with great style using the coastal scenery to such effect that the little fishing port of St. Tropez became a major tourist attraction.

This is one Allen movie I didn't like... something about him not being a nervous wreck bugged me...
Just came home from seeing The Avengers, it was so very good! my nerdy brain was working overtime. I went with a friend who hasn't seen many movies like this and knows little about them I pointed out Stan Lee when his regular cameo came and after the movie she asked me 'who is this Stanley?'
Stan Lee!! was my answer.

The last movie I saw at the cinema was 'The Artist'. I'm glad I went to it at the cinema- it's just one of those movies you need to, I guess. The way the actors used body language and visual cues to communicate their message was wonderful. The music, cinematography and the whole style of the movie was just excellent. I'll give it an 8 out of 10, since the story was a bit too simple and predictable, but I walked out of the cinema with a smile just as I did when I saw the new Muppet movie.

Dark Shadows
This movie gets a 3/10 for false advertising. The previews led me to believe that this would be some funny, tongue-in-cheek tribute to the Dark Shadows series, but most all of the funny scenes were shown in the previews. The movie itself went on too long, and the only point of it that I could see was to showcase the skills of the make-up artists and all the other artists who were responsible for the way that Johnny Depp's, Eva Greene's and Bella Heathcote's complexions appeared in this movie. While I was not admiring the white skin and the dark eye make-up, I was cringing at the melodrama. And maybe I shouldn't have expected more than the melodrama, given the nature of the series itself, but the previews were misleading. It looked like it might be funny, but it really wasn't at all, and all 3 of my 3/10 rating goes to the overall look of presentataion and look of the film.

Sorry Qimi - meant to respond earlier.
The Thin Red Line is a philosophical war film that intersperses the action with the inner dialogues of the characters including the dead. It's quite an unusual film. it does have lingering shots - some of which are quite beautiful, but then there's the contrast of the war and the horror.
Watched Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Very good - understated, in that drab 50's British style. 7/10

The Avengers. It was AWESOME! I'm a huge comic book nerd, and it was such a perfect movie to feed that part of me. The Amazing Spiderman and The Dark Knight Rises have a lot to compete with, but I'm betting the latter will be even better.

So I watched this film called 'Zombieland' last night on LoveFilm and it was supposed to be a 'Comedy' and I didn't laugh once, I promise you. I looked at the reviews on the internet this morning and I'm astonished that it has so much critical and commercial praise.
What am I missing? The two female characters were shallow and almost like charicatures, and the same was the case for the male lead (the older one with the guns) blah blah blah that's the same for a lot of films. I couldn't really establish a plot, probably because there were times when the characters ran back into where the zombies were and did some truly rediculous things to get themselves back into trouble, so I couldn't really view it as a survival horror/comedy where they were running for their lives. The violence was just...not really neccessary, though I've seen way worse. It was just odd.
Another thing I noted was that it made fun of zombie-movie cliches (the Rules of survival etc.) and yet consciously used a number of cliches in the plot. The cameo of Bill Murray is sad because he's just a washed up actor now.
I think I watched it hoping it would be a clever and sophisticated comedy with slapstick etc. but the violence was just macabre and not used for any satirical purposes in my opinion. I think it was more like Rob Zombie's House of a 1000 Corpses and Devil's Rejects, and Natural Born Killers.
Anway, I won't be watching it again for a revised opinion.

I went to the the movies and saw "The Iron Lady" starring Meryl Streep, she played a wonderful role, although I felt the movie dwelled too much on Thatcher's dementian ithat she developed in her later years, other than that 8/10 from me.
Last night I watched another of Streep's movies on DVD "Doubt" 10/10.

Another Earth
This is a sci-fi film with no name actors about a high school grad who causes a car accident that kills a family, and she tries to atone for the deaths when she gets out of prison. At the time of the event, another planet similar to earth was discovered - in fact it was like a mirror earth - or another earth (which is the name of the movie). It was okay - there were a lot of new agey ideas that found their way into the dialogue. There was mention of Plato's allegory of the cave, questions about the nature of reality etc etc - all woven into the story. I came home from work, I was dead tired, it was on and I watched it.

A stupid timewaster called Dragonball Evolution. Well it was on in the background at least and I was only vaguely aware of it. The reason it was on at all is the director used to be interesting but he's gone downhill something rotten of late. The script was amateurish and the plot unbelievably contrived - seemed to have beeen written to fill itself in.
'Hey - let's put on show!'
'You mean make a movie..?'
'Or a movie...'
'Cool. What'll it'll be about?
'Who cares! We'll just make it up as we go along!'
'What'll be the hook to get people to watch it?'
'Um, explosions, special effects and-... how about Kung Fu!?'
'Kung Fu?'
'Yeah - and an evil demon who wants to take over the world and something about dragons because I like dragons.'
'I like dragons too.'
'Are we agreed we all like dragons?'
'All we need is some investment money and we'll be set!'
'I know a producer who likes dragons...'
'Excellent - we're halfway there!'

I don't read the comics (not sure why?) so I just went with it. Although I do need to see Thor, Captain America, and The Hulk now.
I saw the Avengers with my friend who hadn't seen all the other movies and knew little about them, during the break I tried to explain all the connections between the movies and the Tesserac and why Banner is Hulk and that Stark's dad knew Rogers and in Iron man II he looks at his dads diary and sees drawings of the tesserac. It's all connected. I was also looking for some 'Whedon actors' cameo. After going on about this for about 5 minuets I realized the people around me were all quiet, now that shut me up.
After the movie I heard some guys talking about Bana as the first Hulk and I just thougth to myself 'jerks' and started explaining loudly to my friend how Lou Ferriggino was Hulk years ago and still is credited as him in all Hulk movies, cause he talks for him.
OK now I have babbled on about this in a rate a movie thread so I am gonna shut up and talk to myself. but you should see the these movies 'Thor' and 'Captain America' are very very good.
