"Inland Empire" David Lynch 9/10...although after a while i was completely lost, but in such a pleasant way!!! The movie is visually stunning and some of the Lynchian actors star in short but memorable roles. I'd have given the film a 10/10 for the simple fact that it kept me and some other 60 people nailed to our seats for 3,5 hours and for the fact that you couldn't hear the tiniest noise in the theatre..it was like the spectators were holding their breath!

"Il Gattopardo" Lucchino Visconti 8/10. A great film, but slightly boring at parts.

Do I think Jessica Biel is a bad actress? I suppose not. Would I classify her as a good actress? I don't know. Not really. I don't know. She is another person that I just consider kind of average. I really think she was an incredibly odd choice for "The Illusionist", though. Edward Norton wasn't as good as he could've been. His accent kind of irritated me.

She was good in "Mulholand Drive"- the strange/weird David Lynch thriller, but "Painted Veil" had a lot to be desired, in my opinion. I thought that Norton again, was kind of 'wooden' in this role, but worst of all was when I saw a preview, or actually was listening to it, when I was waiting for another DVD to get to the menu; it was then I realised the script was really, really lame - it was just poorly written and delivered - you know it is so, when you can't listen to it and enjoy the lines without the picture. Maybe that can be the new litmus test for rating a film.:lol:

I've just seen "the hills have eyes". I really wonder who comes up with these ideas... I mean, the hills have eyes is just about the most bloody, gory and messy film I've ever seen. Are the people who make films like this really alright, mentally? It was better than many films of it's genre (ultra violent zombie/horror/freakshow), since had something that actually has a faint resemblance with a plot... It isn't good, and I would definately not recommend it to anyone but people who are obcessed with blood and gore.

I watched London yesterday. I came across this film by accident. There is a lot of drug use and crazy sex situations. It's about this guy Syd, played by Chris Evans, who is still in love with his ex girlfriend. He uses a lot drugs in the film and the movie keeps flashing back to key moments in their relationship. The character shouts a lot and really seems to have issues and it's no wonder he has no girlfriend.

I guess out of 10, I would give it an 8 just because it actually held my attention. All the characters were flawed and the film's conclusion was bittersweet, assuming you can muster any sympathy for this character Syd. Even if you can't muster any sympathy for Syd, the film's conclusion is satisfyingly plausible, given what we know of the characters.

Well, i liked Naomi Watts in Mullholand Dr, 21 grams and The ring. She was great in these films ;) . But i haven't seen the one you are discussing about ;)

Last night I watched Planet Terror produced by Robert Rodriguez, who also had a part in From Dusk Til Dawn and Sin City.

Planet Terror is a Grindhouse production - a tribute to old, low budget, gory movies featuring lots of violence, blood, death, and effects that make it look like you're watching an old movie on old-time reel. Bruce Willis and Rose McGowen were two big-name stars in the movie- I'm sure there were others but I can't recall who they were right now. All I can say is that there was a lot of blood and gore. Rose McGowen plays a stripper who loses a leg, and in the course of the action has it replaced with a machine gun stump that she uses to kill all the flesh eating zombies who are coming to devour her and a a small band of survivors (and she's wearing a leather mini-skirt). The small band of survivors consists of a few women in short shorts and low cut blouses and heels, a Middle-Eastern biochemical engineer, a small-town tough cop, a goofus who makes bbq, and some tattoed, sexy bad-%&$ who drives a tow truck. All the stereotypes, violence, and skin are there, and all that makes for an all-american entertaining Saturday night.

Not my favorite type of move though so I can't give it a 10/10. So it only gets an 8.

That is what I hoped for when they made "Unforgiven", but, unfortunately, it didn't become a trend then. I wish there would be that one movie that would spark the interests of producers and moviegoers for westerns.

Well, I saw "The History Boys" the other day. I would give it 9/10. I really liked it. I was mainly curious about it because the play was such a big hit in London and New York. So, I was quite satisfied with the film.

Cronenberg's best film tied with Videodrome. There is so much emotionnal impact in this film that it will prove to everybody that Cronenberg is not just about gore and horror. See this, one of the best films of 2007, but don't expect another History of Violence.

I just saw American Gangster. It wasn't as good as I thought it would be. Actually, I did have my doubts: Ridley Scott's direction is always dull. The actors usually pull the movie together. I expected to be blown away by Washington's performance. It had a reserved power, but Scott didn't explore it. Josh Brolin, who caught my attention in Planet Terror, gives the audience something to reacte to. 6/10

Has anybody seen No Country for Old Men? I am dying to see it.

Last night on TV I saw (for the second or third time) The Asphalt Jungle by the legendary John Huston.
It is a gritty, stark picture of the life of urban crime and tangentally, the officers of the law who are charged with
preventing/punishing it.
What strikes me the most in watching this in 2007 is how so far ahead of its time the film and the script are, mostly in its depiction of the criminals (both petty and masterminds) as quasi-sympathetic human beings.In the era in which the movie was produced (1950) Hollywood censors insisted on the criminals being shown as villains, and there was no variation on the theme of "Crime does not pay." Crime certainly does not pay in The Asphalt Jungle, but the audience finds itself almost rooting for the poor characters to succeed.

The lead character, Dix, as played by Sterling Hayden, is the strong, silent anti-hero. His girlfriend, "Doll" as played by Jean Hagen is a far cry from her character in Singin in the Rain; a sensitive, unsung actress whose career was cut short too soon. Marilyn Monroe has a bit part in the movie, and her final scene is a portrait in vulnerability. Every actor in that movie gives the performance of his career,notably James Whitmore as the "crippled" accessory.

If this movie is ever aired again or if you can get it on DVD,
I recommend it highly.

Brief Encounter - 8/10

A film of a Noel Coward story from 1945. Should be good, right? I stayed up last night just to watch it (it always seems to be on TV in the middle of the night). I only hear praise for it. Well, big surprise! I was somewhat disappointed. The female lead was so melodramatic (though the man was fine). That always annoys me. They had their "affair" (which happened quite fast - the movie was fairly short). I didn't even notice anything to be all that controversial in their little affair! It was hardly anything to gossip about to the neighbors. It was just another one of those stories where the two main characters are already with someone else, but then fall in love with each other. Naturally, they know that they should be with one another, but ultimately they go their separate ways because it is the "right" thing to do. I've seen it before (this sort of storyline - not this exact story), and I have seen it done MUCH better! Still, though, it was a very good film. Just not great.

I just got back from this movie, it was stellar, a visual feast for the eyes. The best CG movie I've ever seen by far. The graphics themselves were amazingly detailed, but also just the quality of the film making from cinematography, transitions, choreography, it was all great. Too often an "effects-film" forgets about all those things, this film did not. I highly recommend seeing it if you got IMAX near you. I'm sure the regular version is good too, but since I saw the IMAX version I don't know. The IMAX version was awesome though.

You're definitely right, Admin! Beowulf is the best! It was a great film, indeed. Although, how I wish to see it in IMAX 3D, I can't because at my place we don't have that, you have to travel for hours through plane just to see a movie in IMAX. But it was great anyways, though I know that if I'm going to see the IMAX version I will be stunned even more. It's really amazing! The effects were so cool that I thought they were all real. I can't believe it. I'm so thankful that I don't care about the 'Uncanny Valley', because if I am, I will never forgive myself. Beowulf is brilliant. That's all I can say. :D

Wow. This is a powerful entry from the Coen brothers. Javier Bardem does acieve a chilling performance.

There are two scenes that contain about a line or two of awkward dialogue ... for me atleast. I heard the sucking of teeth as the film closed. I thought it was a powerful and suitable ending, but others wanted more of a commercial ending. The ending along with the other elements of the film acheive the subtle beauty of a great short story. Lit Net members should enjoy such techniques.;) The film achieves suspense that would shake Hitchcock

I give the film 9/10.

Room With a View ~ I have seen this Merchant Ivory film many times now and I love it and of course, it is a stunning score. I own the soundtrack recording and listen to it often. I love the book by Forster, which I read first, several times now. Pretty much I think the film captures the book, but of course books, are always the very best. This book really makes me laugh at times. I missed one scene in the film, that is so colorful in the book, with a field of violets, but in the film they say 'heather' and 'poppies'. I am yet to detect those poppies. I liked the subtle performances in this film and all the acting was good, especially Helena Bonham-Carter and Maggie Smith. Only Daniel Day-Lewis got on my nerves, since I felt he overplayed his role. I would have liked him to be a more subtle character, or more believable, a little less clownish. I could not see why Lucy would ever fall for him to begin with, not with the adorable Julian Sands waiting in the wings, afterall.
Good film and well worth watching.

I must say that I didn't mind Daniel Day-Lewis in there. Besides, for me, he isn't so bad to look at either. ;) Isn't the music nice? I love Richard RObbins' compositioins (though I know some of it in there belongs to Puccini). Have you heard his score for the Merchant Ivory film version of Forster's novel Maurice? Simply one of the best ever! I haven't seen "A Room With a View" or "Maurice" (one of my all-time favorite films) in awhile. Now I am in the mood to watch them again! :)

I came on just to see what film you had watched and instead you were commenting on mine.;) I got in this strange mood and had to see the film last nigth; and I have new films here to watch, too, still in the package. Problem is this whole switch in technology. I will explain in a minute. I think I had listened to the ST of RWAV earlier - do you have it? It is so beautiful; this prompted the film watching - also I find the film just so darn amusing.:D I can't understand my good friend here, saying it was a total bore...well, except for the score. She must have no patience with these type films. I played the ST so much, I actually got a little tired of it and had to lay off for awhile. Now I love it again!
Ok here is the thing - anyone else having these problems? My DVD player now seems to be shot or something - it just keeps stalling or pausing about every 60 secs and it does not happen till I am well into the film. My son tried to reset it and still it does it. He said throw it out and buy another one. I just bought a LCD HD TV and it seems these old components just don't match up either - well not like they should. I have a component cable on this one and found out this is anaglog and not digital, so if I buy an upconverting player now...I need a 50 dollar HDMI cable (digital)....wow - this stuff gets expensive and confusing. Anyone shed any light on this for me? Just though I might ask. Sorry it is getting away from our movie reviews but I feel desperate.
So last night being banned from the DVD player I watched a VHS tape - awful quality translation to my new TV though - oh well - it looked like a Monet or Renoir painting....haha...it fit the genre anyway.

American Gangster is a very personal, multi-faceted look at the mob scene, and Denzel Washington was spectacular as always... He was a good choice for the part. The movie was a little long, pushing 3 hours, but still well done. 8/10

I almost forgot! I watched "Miss Potter" last night! I would definitely give this film a 9/10. I actually didn't know much about her life either. As soon as I saw the trailer for it I knew that this was my sort of film. I truly enjoyed it. I did find it somewhat sad, though. Then again, I have never seen any biopic, or "based on a true story" film, where it hasn't been a little moving (unless we are talking in terms of something like "Zodiac"!). Zellweger was good enough in it. The supporting cast were all fine. I just thought it seemed like a refreshing change from the sort of films that I have been watching lately. I haven't seen a nice "period" film in awhile either. So, I say it is a very good film! :thumbs_up :thumbs_up

I knew it! I knew you would like the film - wasn't it refreshing though. I thought the exact same thing. It was wholesome without being maudlin. It had fine performances and emotional moments and so much strength of character. I loved the scene when her love interest, (Ewan McGregor), sang to her as they danced in her room - truly sweet and touching. Funny, nearly the same thing with me; I watched about 5 mins of the film, and right away, I knew this was my type of film and I would love it; it would be a good movie, as it did prove to be. My mother likes hardly any films now-a-days and I gave it to her to watch, after me since, it did have optional subtitles for the hearing impaired (yeah!) and when she gave it back to me she said "That was a wonderful film!". I think that sums it up nicely. Glad you also enjoyed it so. No doubt I will be watching that film again soon.:thumbs_up

I always have my DVD's on with subtitles, if they have them! I swear that I can't hear anything on any DVD! I had the worst time watching the last LOTR. That was when I discovered how to put them on there with this player. I was in heaven! Now I do it whenever I get the chance.

Actually, I was thinking about the movies to use, too, but I decided on the "specials" this year. Next year I will probably do films. :D

It was incredible...and kind of made me hate the British army of the 1920's...or at least a good portion of their soldiers who were stationed in Ireland at that time. :rolleyes: I was certainly aware of the repression going on but that movie brought it home on a much more personal level than reading a book or an article.

I finally saw No Country for Old Men.:D

Wow. This is a powerful entry from the Coen brothers. Javier Bardem does acieve a chilling performance.

There are two scenes that contain about a line or two of awkward dialogue ... for me atleast. I heard the sucking of teeth as the film closed. I thought it was a powerful and suitable ending, but others wanted more of a commercial ending. The ending along with the other elements of the film acheive the subtle beauty of a great short story. Lit Net members should enjoy such techniques.;) The film achieves suspense that would shake Hitchcock

I give the film 9/10.

Room With a View ~ I have seen this Merchant Ivory film many times now and I love it and of course, it is a stunning score. I own the soundtrack recording and listen to it often. I love the book by Forster, which I read first, several times now. Pretty much I think the film captures the book, but of course books, are always the very best. This book really makes me laugh at times. I missed one scene in the film, that is so colorful in the book, with a field of violets, but in the film they say 'heather' and 'poppies'. I am yet to detect those poppies. I liked the subtle performances in this film and all the acting was good, especially Helena Bonham-Carter and Maggie Smith. Only Daniel Day-Lewis got on my nerves, since I felt he overplayed his role. I would have liked him to be a more subtle character, or more believable, a little less clownish. I could not see why Lucy would ever fall for him to begin with, not with the adorable Julian Sands waiting in the wings, afterall.
Good film and well worth watching.

Anyway, I liked the film. I have never read the novel to compare them to each other. I do know that I got such a kick out of this film. I think it is so twisted! Christian Bale is great in it! He is just so sick! It is a little bloodier than what I prefer (I can handle all sorts of films, but this one just seemed bloodier to me). Still, though, I actually enjoyed it. I have watched it more than once when it has been on TV just because I find Bale entertaining. So, for the other performances, I think I might give it 8/10. For Bale, though, I would definitely give it a 10/10 for every scene he is in! His performance alone is worth the time spent watching it!

Hi FifthE, I do know what you mean about the role of Lewis being greatly exaggerated and I can probably buy into some of that idea, but it might just be me. I loved Day-Lewis in "Last of the Mohicans" and several other films - "My Left Foot" was amazing. He is a fine actor indeed, but I saw "The Gangs of New York" and I wished I had not; I really hated him in that film. Oh and I saw him in "The Age or Innocence" and I loved his role in that, also. I just felt he went a little 'over-the-top' in RWAV. Have you read the book? It is a great book and I don't laugh often while reading books, but I laughed and laughed at the water hole bathing scene; especially Mr. Bebes. What fun that scene was! Yes, true that it was suggested that they eloped in the film version; and I see you have read the book and so it was stated as such (?) - I had forgotten that part.
I just think that Maggie Smith's form of subtle snobbery seemed more believable than Lewis' portrayal.

Yes that is a wonderful movie. I think its one of the truest tellings of my countries stuggles during the early 20th century. Its also based on a true story. Many families wear torn apart during the civil war, some pro treaty and others anti treaty. It was a terrible time especially as the war of Independence had only ended a few years before hand. As for the black and Tans, they were basicly ex WW1 soldiers who returned home to unemployment, many of them suffered from shell shock or had some psyhcological problems after the trama of the war. They were hard on the Irish. The First ever Bloody sunday, which is depicted in the Okay movie Michael Collins, was when they turned up at a GAA match in tanks and strated firing at the crowd.
I had ansestors who fought in 1916, War of Independence and the civil war. it was a dark time in an era of new hope.

The Africa film is Notes for an African Orestes. I'm not sure that one's available. I would like to see it as well (as well as anything done by Pasolini, heh). 1001 Nights is part of the trilogy with Canterbury Tales and The Decamaron.

I saw Beowulf last week, which was certainly an interesting experience... the movie seems to blend CGI and live-action and it's sometimes difficult to differentiate between them. It certainly wasn't bad though, I can recommend it for a fun night out :D Not sure how far it sticks to the original poem however. But then what movie ever does these days?

Not too long ago I saw a version of the epic on the Science Fiction channel; it was extremely well-done, and had excellent production values esp. considering that this was a cable channel. I haven't seen the current Hollywood version, but I've seen still photos and read reviews, so to answer the q. as to whether the movie deviates from the poem: I don't think it
accurately follows the original. One thing I do know is that Grendel's mother didn't look ANYTHING like Angelina Jolie.

I saw Beowulf as well - in 3D. It was pretty good 'cept those annoying glasses kept itching my nose like mad. (Glasses ontop of glasses, can you imagen? It's a pain.) I recently watched Jan Svankmajer's Alice (or Neco z Alenky.) I'd wanted to see it for a long time, and I just found a copy.

The film is a strange re-telling of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, wherein the White Rabbit is a taxidermized specimen who pulls his pocket-watch out of his open chest cavity, licking off his saw-dust stuffing from the watch's surface to check the time; Alice is a not-entirely-nice little girl, and an animated fox stole crawls out of the teapot at the Mad Hatter's teaparty and licks the cups dry with a disconcertingly realistic tongue...There's more weird stuff, but that should give an idea of the film's take on things...

...Oh, and the caterpillar is an old sock with dentures and a human eye; he sews his own eye shut when he goes to sleep.

I'm glad I saw it; it was truly original, and very strange. The pacing (though it suits the film) is too slow for my taste, but I wasn't too bothered by it. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to Lewis Carroll fans, but if you like surreal film experiences, you should check it out.

It was OK. It is about Henry Miller, his wife June and Anais Nin. I can remember it being such a big deal when it was first out. It wasn't bad but it wasn't spectacular either. I could really take or leave it.

Very depressing film but very good. I have seen it so many times. I just stayed up to watch it again the other night. It is about a man (Eric Roberts) who is dying of AIDS. He throws a party before he decides to commit suicide. Yeah, it is very "uplifting"! It is incredibly sad, but very well-acted.

I just watched this again the other day. I love this movie! It really is just pure, simple fun! I saw the original film in the theater when it was first out. I enjoyed that alot. So, I liked the idea of it being turned into a Broadway musical. I saw the stage show and I thoroughly enjoyed it (even though it is slightly different from the 1988 film). Now this film is actually slightly different from the stage production. I have to say that I liked the movie much better. I think it has the feeling of an "old-time" musical to it. It is just a fun film to watch.

A Scanner Darkly 9/10

It was a little hard to follow at times, but otherwise it was pretty good. Keaneu Reeves Wynona Ryder, Woody Harrelson and Robert Downy Jr. star in this animated film about a group of drug users and the under-cover narcotics agents among them trying to track the source of a dangerous, brain damaging, addictive drug called Substance D.

It's based on the semi-autobiographical book by Philip Dick, written in 1977, after he and several of his friends are permanently affected by their heavy drug use in the late sixties and early seventies.

I have Coffee and cigarettes and yes, he was tolerable in it. He was the nervous espresso drinker, right? But he's not my favourite actor either for talent or looks (a far cry from Johnny Depp for sure!).
And he always seems to act alongside his wife in his films...

The other film in which he was ok so to speak, was Il piccolo diavolo (The little devil), but it did have Walter Matthau as well.

The end is beautiful, one of those rare films where the audience knows what the characters must find themselves. Highly recommend it.

But the show felt certain obligations to fitting into a Broadway show format and when it drifted off the movie it was very mediocre. Plus the songs and singing wasn't very interesting. Yes, I most definitely do have the soundtrack! :D I just loved it so much.

I did like the film when I first saw it, but something happened that made me change my opinion of it. How could a personal situation change my opinion of a film? Well, if you knew the situation, I think it would make sense. You actually wouldn't even have to see the film to understand my reasoning.

If you have the album and like it, I imagine you will like the show LW. You must now know the story and the set and movement on stage was pretty good. I didn't care how the Lady of the Lake became prominant in the play, just so they could add a love interest and have a female character more prominant. And I thought Lancelot being gay was corny. Was that in the movie? I also didn't think there were any memorable songs. But the scenes where they "run away" from the battle and the killer rabbit were well done.

I have Coffee and cigarettes and yes, he was tolerable in it. He was the nervous espresso drinker, right? But he's not my favourite actor either for talent or looks (a far cry from Johnny Depp for sure!).
And he always seems to act alongside his wife in his films...

The other film in which he was ok so to speak, was Il piccolo diavolo (The little devil), but it did have Walter Matthau as well.

there is just something so natural about it. And the songs in it are beautiful. It also brings to life a reality that is in Dublin today, with eastern europeans living in rundown places, and the poverty some of them live in here. The Big issue, and flower selling thing is there everyday. The relationship between the two main characters was full of passion. No wonder they ended up getting together in real life!

I was surprised to find out that this movie was actually good. At least for me it was good. I got it from Netflix "just because". I ended up liking it enough. I am one of the few people that actually doesn't mind Kevin Costner. I think that he was the best part of the film. Definitely a different role than he usually plays.

Niamh, I love that version and recently broke down and purchased it. I love Ciaran Hinds, even if he is 'not a looker', as you put it. Maybe he appeals to older ladies like me, who know;) . He has 'something' one can't quite describe - *swoons* is good.
I absolutely love him in the role of the A&E version of "The Mayor of Casterbridge" - the ending breaks my heart and I sob everytime. He makes the perfect Michael Henchard in that film, and the perfect Captain Wentworth in "Persuasion".

Last night I tried to watch the rest of ..

"White Nights" starring the two incredible talents and dancers - Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gregory Hinds....

let me explain.... I need a new DVD player and am still trying to figure out just what kind to buy for my new HD TV...you know, technology keeps advancing so rapidly that one is left standing in a cloud of dust, totally confused. Right now there are dozens of different kinds out there, to choose from...:eek2: I am thoroughly miffed by now! Ok, anyway, my current player is on the blink and I can watch about an hour and then it just freezes up, like an older computer.

So anyway, I am half way through that film and enjoying it very much. I only saw it years ago. The story may lack a little, but the acting is fairly good and the dancing is extraordinary and well worth seeing the film for. Also, the song "Say You, Say Me" was giving the Oscar that year, for best song. It is a very interesting film and if you like dancers, trust me, you will like this film very much. The blending of ballet and tap is amazing! Also, Helen Mirren and Isabella Roselina have memorable parts, although short.

So when the freezeup came, I switched to my VHS player and watched the rest of...

"Dead Poet's Society" - what a great film this is and after all these years it still holds up and I cry at certain scenes. I would give this fine film a 10/10 definitely. I can't find fault with anything in it. :thumbs_up

Haven't much felt like thinking about movies lately just watching but, just watched and am about to sit down to watch it again before I check out the 3 commentary tracks, so I may have some to add afterwards.

"Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" directed by Park Chan-Wook.
Well, it's third in a sort of spiritual trilogy by the director I saw "Oldboy" the second but not the first. After loooving Oldboy so much I had very high expecations for this one and in some aspects it pulls through though it is a very different film though with a similar premise. Stylistically it is gorgeous, Park Chan-Wook has such an aesthetic talent I adore watching his films and I get quite distracted in several scenes. A solid story with twists I didn't feel were as strong as in Oldboy but of course it's a different film and it was quite downplayed which I can appreciate.

It's a very good movie, if you can deal with the content (some people can't I realize) it is immensely enjoyable. I would rate it at about 8/10.

I last saw Atonement, at the cinema. It was absolutely incredible, captivating and so utterly moving (and that was just James Mcavoy...just kidding). In particular the scene at Dunkirk was exquisite... The plot does stick to the original story line quite well but I suppose I must applaud Ian Mcewen who wrote the novel. I would highly recommend the book too. I wont spoil the ending, but it is so inspiring. The music deffinitely adds the right tone for parts of the story and I was almost sad enough to buy the soundtrack CD. Keira Knightely and James Mcavoy show amazing on-screen chemistry and once again... James Mcavoy, hot, scottish accent. Need I say more? Deffinitely one of my favourites.

I was so tired last night. Plus I had to go to an interview today. Yet, I stayed up until 5 in the morning to watch 2 movies that I have seen numerous times (especially the one!). I am just crazy! :p

*West Side Story - I have seen this film an insane amount of times. No normal person should not only know all the songs, and the exact way that they sing them (which is really no big deal as I have the soundtrack), but to also know all of the dialogue and choreography! Anyway, I did see this musical peformed on stage. I have to admit that the film was MUCH BETTER!! Stage show was OK, but the film is so much better! Anyway, WSS does have its faults. Natalie Wood as Maria is a joke. The only actor (and I have NO idea why this is) that does his own singing is George Chakiris. That includes the women. Why Rita Moreno doesn't do hers is beyond me! Also, as for the story, I hate Maria with a passion! Then again, as this is based on "Romeo and Juliet", I have always despised Juliet. They both just annoy me to death! Anyway, having said these things, I will admit to LOVING this movie!!! It is so good! Since I was a kid I always felt that the most interesting part of the story was the conflict between the Jets and Sharks. The dancing is fantastic. I never understood why Bob Fosse was considered this fantasic choreographer when someone like Jerome Robbins was alive at one time and made something look as brilliant as WSS! As for music, it is classic! "Tonight (Quintet)" is definitely high on my list as one of the best songs from a musical ever! Great film. I will give it a 9.95/10 :) (it does have those few flaws!).

*Corrina, Corrina - Ray Liotta and Whoopi Goldberg. He is a widower and she is the woman that he hires as a housekeeper to take care of his house and look after his daughter. Another film that I absolutely love (though alot of people only give it like 2 1/2 stars - everyone has their own opinion, right?). I heard once that the director (I believe it was her story) based this on her own life. The ending is so good. The ending is "made-up". She ended the story the way she wanted her life to really be. This is just a good movie! A good story. Every now and then it is nice to watch something like this. 10/10

The best movie I've seen - particularly at a theater - in a very long time. I did not realize, entering the theater, that it would be almost three hours long, but not a moment of it feels drawn-out or superfluous. It's somewhat graphic without being gratuitous, and, with the exception of one minor cliche (the juxtoposition of the congregation singing "Amazing Grace" while [something kind of important] happens) pretty original all the way. I watched Half Nelson today starring Ryan Gosling :D . I had seen it before in theatres when it came out but wanted to watch it again. It is a great film, hard to watch at points, I found myself looking away from the screen so many times as the character that Gosling created just keeps falling down over and over no matter how hard he tries.... Fantastic film with another great performance for Ryan Gosling. 9/10

I am now going to review "Sweeney Todd". I saw it at the first showing today at 10:40 in the morning!

Anyone who knows me knows that my 2 big obsessions are the musicals "The Phantom of the Opera" and "Sweeney Todd". Well, I have also seen both shows performed in the theater. So, I am very hesitant when it comes to film adaptations. Now I am probably the one person who really liked the film of "Phantom" (it has a few flaws, though). Stiil, it absolutely does NOT compare to the original stage show. That made me a little worried about "Sweeney". Well, I will be honest. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!!!!!

It has some things that are negative.
* Helena Bonham Carter - she is OK in it (she was the one thing that I was afraid of), but her voice is a little weak sometimes.
* They shortened the story from approximately 3 hours to only 2 on film, but I can live with that. They cut out songs that aren't "major" to me. They did shorten "A Little Priest", though. :(
* They cut out "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd"!!!! That was my major issue. They cut one of the greatest songs in musical theater history! BUT the "background" music to that song is what plays throughout the opening credits and in different parts of the film. So I will have to be satisfied with that.
* It wasn't nearly as bloody as people made it out to be. Let's just say what was worse was when the bodies fell through the chute! And the rats. Rats are always bad (even if they are in a film for a few seconds like with this one).

Johnny Depp was a very pleasant surprise, vocally. Actually, other than HBC's thin voice every now and then, they were all OK. My mother went to see it with me and in the middle of the film she leaned over and said "If Johnny Depp deserves an award for anything in his whole careeer, it is definitely this film". He was SO good! I am not one who goes ga-ga over him! So, yes, he impressed me very much so!!

I love the overall look of the film. I am not trying to be biased, but it is definitely Burton's BEST film!!!

Now I do NOT recommend this film to just anyone. My mother and I saw it on stage about 11 years ago. A couple left during intermission and never came back. I guarantee they won't be seeing the movie! If you don't know what this is about, or you do and it really doesn't sound like something you'd like, don't see it. For all the other people out there who are willing to be open-minded, have a wicked sense of humor and really enjoy music (remember that this is basically more like an opera rather than a musical), GO SEE IT!!!! The man behind me, and his mother who had to be at least 80, LOVED it!! They laughed and had a good time with it! My mother just loved it! She kept talking about it the rest of the day.

Saw Superbad 10/10

It's so ridiculous it's funny. I tend to like movies that make you go "huh?" before you laugh out loud and that's what this is. There's plenty of crude and lewd humor, so if you have a more refined sensibility, I would suggest you skip it.

Three nerds anticipate high school graduation with all the usual, male teen objectives: getting laid and getting alchohol, and getting alchohol in order to get laid. I know it sounds like the same old movie that keeps coming out every few years with different hair styles and different soundtracks, but this one, to me at least, had a fresh approach and I say give it a chance.

I saw P.S. I Love You yesterday and it was really good. It was a tragic love story but it wasn't really depressing like some. I think I would describe it as 'poignant' - and it was deeply involved with the characters and life and heritage. I had to choke back tears pretty much the whole movie- again not because it was sad, but it was just that moving. My friends and I walked out and I was like "Sheesh, I could turn right back around and go watch it again!" and everyone agreed.

So I give it a 10/10. Definitely a favorite.

Well, I saw "Peter's Friends". I happen to own it and it was one choice considering I did not get to the library in time for closing and my DVD player is pretty well shot. I have seen this film several times before, and some say it is the British answer to "The Big Chill". It is not the best movie I have watched but I do enjoy it, and I get a lot of laughs from it; and some of the lines are very funny, has that quick English type wit and humor.
This film stars some real noteworthies:
Kenneth Branagh (who also directed it), Emma Thompson (his then wife), Hugh Laurie, Rita Rudner (who wrote the script), Imeda Staunton, Alphonsia Emmanuel, Phyllida Law (who is Emma Thompson's real life mother), and last but not least the great Stephen Fry ---wow, what a cast! So interesting to see them all in one film in their early days and all have gone on to stardom. I think I appreciate the viewing of this film after several times around. Some have commented, such as on Amazon, that they actually liked this film better than it's American counterpart, "The Big Chill"...I think to some extent I agree. It has more style and is quite hilarious at times but also has a lot of serious touching moments, like the couple who lost one of their twins, coming to an understanding between them and tenderness. The characters interact well and this is interesting to observe....very much like a play and this is a big part of it's charm. I hate rating movies so I will just say it is a very enjoyable and entertaining film.

LW, I don't know what it was; I just could not think that night, to rate it. I get this way sometimes. I don't really like ratings, like some stars hate the Oscars! Ok, if you go to Amazon, people are aping out about "Peter's Friends" -well, finally - I am glad someone is 'finally' appreciating this little known film! I didn't know how much I liked it, until I saw it a few times, and it keeps getting more and more interesting to me. I love the interaction of the characters, and basically we have it set up as a play form, in a couple room - two biggies are the dinner scene and the study scene, New Years Eve. The writing is 'right-on', I think and I picked up on some great lines, the other night, that I think I had missed before. On Amazon, most people did give it a 5 out of 5, I was glad of that, but I would be with you and give it a 8/10 - that sounds totally fair to me. I highly recommend it to anyone and I agree - it was better than "The Big Chill"...I only saw that film, for the first time a few years ago - I own it on tape, since the video store had a sell-out sale (cheap). So, I watched it and said to myself - so what is the big deal,...or as the title says - the big chill??? So, everyone seek out "Peter's Friends" - I don't think you will regret it.

Sounds disappointing to me, also. My son grew up with the Muppets and I would probably remain a 'purest' with their earlier films, preferring those. I will have to see it perhaps.... someday.

This is very interesting, if you have not seen it already - goes all through the history of the book, then of films and productions and 'our' guy, Ken Branagh ;) makes a few brief appearances, too....what else could we ask for? I really liked it and may watch it again. Good documentary film - narrated by Roger Moore - wasn't he one of the 007's? Anyway, he got old looking but still has that great British charm. His narration was commendable. Good doc film - see it! Imagine "Frankentein" was written in early 1800's and still going so strong today. What a great book by a mere teenage girl!

Janine, "Corrina, Corrina" stars Ray Liotta and Whoopi Goldberg. It is set in the 1950's. I think the woman who directed it also wrote it. She said that she based it on her life (so she took liberties with it and had it end the way that she wanted her life to end up in real life - it is a good ending!). Anyway, Liotta (who is a jingle writer) is a widower with a young daughter. She is having a hard time coping with the death of her mother. He hires Whoopi to be the housekeeper. During this time she gets his daughter to open up again and the two of them (Liotta and Whoopi) become friends. It really is just a nice film. See if you can find it and watch it.

I'm trying desperately to work seeing Juno into my holiday schedule. I don't know if anyone else is excited to see it, but I have just been dying to see it. It opens in one theatre here in limited viewings for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday before the full release on Friday....maybe Thursday though.....and yes one day does make a difference :D .

Saw Walk Hard. I guess it's a spoof/parody of Walk the Line, with some other stuff thrown in there. There were some laugh out loud moments but it wasn't as funny as the little girls next to me thought it was. In fact, 3/4 of the way through, the jokes had been recycled one too many times and I wondered when it would end. But it was funny enough if you like crude humor.

What surprised me the most were the number of good reviews it got. John C Reilly is talented and this movie showcases that for the most part, but it wasn't THAT great. However, it is the holidays and most people go see movies with their relatives when they come in town, or with friends, and this movie has some real eye opening scenes and I guess this movie takes care of that. I'd rather laugh with my relatives then watch some intense icky drama.

I watched The Commitments last night. Love that movie. Got kind of nostalgic watching it.

I saw Awake and it made me want to go to sleep (har har). I am a big Hayden fan but this was a crap movie. When he's good, he's really good, but he wasn't able to do much for this steaming pile of dung. One of the few things that this movie had going for it was Hayden's presence and he looked like a big dork. Whoever did his make-up and wardrobe needs to be blacklisted (unless the objective was to make him look as undesirable as possible and that doesn't seem like a smart strategy given the dullness of this so-called thriller).

I was unimpressed with the surgery scenes. This movie was supposed to do for surgery what Jaws did for swimming in the ocean. It didn't. It would have been better to cut out some of the uninteresting opening scenes and extend the movie to include a bad-*** Clay waking up to get revenge on the ones who tried to kill him. Or at least some kind of interaction between his character and Alba's.

BTW: Alba was okay in her part, but she wasn't quite vile enough.

5/10 - I was so disappointed. :(

I watched The Good Shepherd finally, for the second time, though I've attempted to watch it about four times.

The Good Shepherd is one of those movies that, even if you were paying attention the first time, you would have to watch it again just to put all the pieces together (assuming you are able to concentrate for the duration of the film).

The movie is about a father who loves his son. But, you don't know that until you get to the end with all the back and forth between the main character's flashbacks and the progression of the actual story taking place (and the flashbacks serve to flesh out the main story).

After all that, I can't give it any less than an 8/10 simply because it was such a challenge to watch. I don't know that showing the thing in sequential order would have added anything to it. Besides, as humans, we all make decisions based on what happened in the past and how we perceived those events and how those events shaped us into the people we are today.

Matt Damon was perfectly stony and emotionless as the CIA official who does what he can to protect his son, and you don't know what's happening until it's all done, and that's just how it should be when the CIA is involved. You have to go back and look at what happened and then put the pieces together. I guess that's why I can't give this movie any less than 8, despite the difficulty I had in watching it and having to go back and re-watch just to put it all together again in my mind.

Well, I watched "Amazing Grace" the other night. That was a very, very good film. It is your basic, historical drama with a positive ending. It is about the abolition of slavery. If you know anything about the story (which I did), then you know how it ended anyway. Still, I love movies like this!!! Very well-acted! One of the better films that I have seen recently. 9.75/10.

I watched "Awakenings" again last night. I haven't seen it in such a long time. Still, I have seen it. So it is a little ridiculous to stay up until 5:00 in the morning to watch the entire film like I had never seen it before! Anyway, I first saw this movie when I was 12. My mother got 2 tickets for a preview screening. Robert DeNiro and Robin Williams are both fantastic in the film. Both of them, in their own way, give heartbreaking performances. When I was 12 I thought it was a very good film. I think the same thing to this very day. It is a very sad story. Since it is based on a true story, it not only makes the story sadder, it also gives you a feeling of frustration for the situation of the characters. Sad, sad movie, but a VERY GOOD movie!! Definitely 10/10!!!!

LW, I absolutely loved "Awakenings" - a very fine, fine film with wonderful performances! You can't beat it. I have been wanting to re-watch it recently, isn't that funny? I may have picked that one up on VHS tape, when the video store sold out; I will have to check my stock. If not, my library has it, I am pretty certain of it.

Have you read the book? I'm kind of scared to see the movie because I liked the book and it's so rare for me to like a movie of a book I've also liked. They always seem to screw it up somehow. :rolleyes:

Puh. I would like to point out that it is quite an enjoyable film, and that I rated it 8/10 on IMDB. It's rated poorly because initially people might expect a horror film, but it turns out the films is about the people, rather than the horror. It's always been like this with Shyamalan. Although personally I prefer Unbreakable or 6th Sense. One other film of this director I've seen is Signs, which left me a little less impressed.

Yes, isn't it funny? My son loves Shyamalan and he hated "The Village". My friend told me she liked it and then I gave it a go and I really did like the film emensely. I saw it recently again. Most people love "Signs" the most, at least here in the US. I did not see "Lady of the Water" - wasn't that the title? BUT I would like to see it, because I like to judge, always, for myself. Have you seen it? I like M.N.S's style very much...he is a big Hitchcock fan and fashions his films after the master, with a lot of thought and care to details. He chose an incredible master to emulate, I think!

Me, too again - that is why I was anxious to see the film, plus I love William Hurt, so it was a double attraction...and I love to check out new Shyamalan films. Interesting to see what he come up with. He seems like a smart and sensitive, nice young man and he has a lot of enthusisam for film-making. Well, I think I know a few more stars you posted in there, too. He is high on my list, too....seems we like the same men, all unattainable of course!;)

Yes, I agree - he is definitely under-rated and he is great. You should see "Return to Paradise" - his performance is really something. Prepare yourself though. How did your mother like it? I don't know about "Quills" - it is strange, I had such mixed feelings about that film. I probably should see it again, and it was probably just me, but then not sure I can take it a second time around. Yes, he looked good in black in "Walk the Line"...Man in Black...JC! Heck, I need a new DVD player, so I can watch it - just recalled that I bought it and have not even opened it yet!

After seeing Spike Lee's Malcom X, I expected his other films to be of equal caliber. I watched Do the Right Thing, Mo' Better Blues and Jungle Fever; I was very disappointed. Mostly the script is to blame, but sometimes it's the acting.

The attention given to the lips in both the story and images is the strength of Mo' Better Blues.

Do the Right Thing has the most potential. The films strength is how Spike adapts theater techniques with the camera. The weakness is the theatrical acting. This may have been contriversial for the time, but anybody who has read Light in August or Invisible Man would not be shocked.

If he thought he was making some sort of film to get people "talking" and to start a little controversy, it didn't work with me. I actually thought that it was kind of silly.

I know that I have seen all of his films except for "Bamboozled". There is someone in there that I truly detest and I couldn't even get paid enough money to sit through it. I also only saw parts of "Girl 6". Now, having mentioned this, I will say that I, basically, find his films to be average. I don't really see him as this great filmmaker. Having said that, though, when he does make a good film, it is a VERY good film. "Malcolm X" was a very good biopic. One of the best that I have seen. Though, as it is a true story, he could've left out his "trademark" shot (the close-up while the actor is "gliding" along past everyone and everything else in the scene). I don't personally "get" that. Anyway, I think that he did a fine job with "Crooklyn" and "Clockers", but I think where he excelled as a filmmaker is with "25th Hour" and "Inside Man". I loved these two movies. Especially "Inside Man"! That was a great movie. I am a little disappointed that he is going to make a sequel to "Inside Man". I think it is just best to leave the story alone now. Of course, I am not a filmmaker. So what do I know, right?

Great movie, 10/10. Just everything about it, even if I tend to dislike Sci-Fi. Funny, exciting, sad...great movie. Joss Whedon certainly can write.
