Modest Symphony in Green and Yellow

Each afternoon when the sun is getting down
and I sit on my small balcony
I hear the song of the sabiá laranjeira.

There are miriads of them
hidden in the few trees
that are left.

Night falls so gently to their song
(but what about the police cars racing through the streets?)

Filtered through a prism
the world looks serene.

But who is going to speak about
the horrors of the night?
The drunken cars,
the lost bullets,
the violence?

The thrush has long gone to sleep
and I gaze with renewed wonder and delight
at the starlight.

Each afternoon when the sun is getting down

There are myriads of thrushes
hidden in the folds of
the few trees
that are left in my street.

Night falls gently lulled by their songn

Filtered through a rainbow prism

the hidden corpses?

The birds have long gone to sleep

heady lilacs lined the baby tears' path
of an impromptu wanderlust -
blossoms not yet turned to rust
their heavenly fragrance hath

my pleasant mood with plentiful drops

I balanced my platter upon my knee
opposite my golden snickersnee
and we sipped our dandelion/bardana tea with glee

Scenario

What can one do with a moat, a wizard, a changeling, a raven and a piccolo?
I will have to employ the service of the wizard,
to put a moat around a water castle, like the fortified ones
of Münster.
The changeling might be more difficult,
if the wizard himself weren´t one,
left as a child in said castle, with
the moat about it.
To find a raven is no problem,
if he agrees to be installed on the top of the castle, with
the moat about it.
Out of nowhere a youngster, full of
wanderlust ( but that´s from another list)
takes out his piccolo and starts to play.
Behold my emotion at seeing
the complete picture.

Now the story can begin.

I dream of a day
when my country will be
truly independent:
free of corruption,
of mismanagement,
of poverty, homelessness,illiteracy,
free from its colonial inheritance
free from debts
free from looking up at richer countries
free from its "street dog" complex
which celebrates the foreign but
despises all that is national
(excepting football and carnival).


If that day arrives,
one can allow for fireworks,
for inviting festoons
for inumerous little flags
in green, yellow and blue.
People will echange gifts.
The children will dance round D. Pedros statue,
who, awoken to life
will once more
rise his sword and proclaim:
"Independence or death".

The Man in the Moon: Red Strings / My Take on a Japanese Fable


Untiringly he chewed his words
like a praying locust
beaming as if they were
sugarplums - invoking subatomic
red strings to unravel then
ushering in large tidal forces
stretching and exciting each

to tie one end to the pinky finger

creating a bond between two beings

I poured myself a glass
of almond milk and kept
the jug - it was one of those
nights... sweltering -
I could see my energy
dollars winging away
though tattered window
screens - a lone box
fan in the window trying
to reign them in to no
avail. Lingering in my soul
the lyrical hymn we sang
in the choir this Sabbath
day... "His eye is on the
sparrow..." and I center.

So poetry it is: I wrestle
with “Who so list to hount”
subsumed in eternal gym-
nastics, sacred not secret,
and I remember planting,
rather transplanting, violets
into a plot of ajugas and
having to abandon them -
and the import of this simple
reflection becomes a revelation
becomes clear - and the scent
of violets fills the air

A red sun hung mid-day like a hangdog
god - neanderthals strained to butcher
two wooly rhinoceroses and a number

of red deer stampeded over a cliff to
escape a fire set earlier by the spear
waving antagonists - the earnest hunters

accelerating their efforts as distant
sounds of vociferous hyenas braved the
still smoldering undergrowth above

biting flies attacked the hunters upon bare
skin where ochre was sparsely applied
or worn away - no leniency given, an

understatement, by the voracious beasties...
when from seemingly nowhere 2-cave bears
emerge from the tree line making a beeline

towards the neanderthals sending them
scrambling, carrying away as much of the
butchered meat possible in a hasty retreat

a crescent moon rules the heavens overseeing
the cave bears gorging themselves near to
bursting barely noticing furtive hyenas

The Legend of the Willow and the Butterfly

In ancient times thousands of years ago
there was a willow.
It was a proud tree
with branches pointed skywards,
and roots solidly planted in the soil.

One day a bad with arrived
with her cauldron and requested
all the leaves of the willow for her magic.
Proud of its leaves the willow said "no"!
But it didn´t reckon with the power of the witch.
She stripped it of all its leaves
and cooked them with fruition
in her big cauldron.

The willow bend its head and wept copiously.
He wept so much that a forest fairy heard him
from the far side of the wood.
She came to its succor
and drove away the witch.

Out of the cauldron,
where the willow leaves had been cooking
there emerged the most beautiful butterfly.
It poised delicately on one of its bare branches
and lo, its leaves were back.
But its crown remained for ever bent,
its branches now point to the ground
the wiiiow leaves flowing down like a mass of hair.
And, when visited by the wind,
it weeps in memory of its early times.

Here's a thumbnail to scratch the surface:

The hardness of a bowling ball has been an issue since I was a junior bowler (60's on)

Back in the day we had plastic bowling balls, rubber bowling balls, and maybe a few other ancient "cover stocks".

The harder the bowling ball the less it would roll without "breaking" or "hook" . A ball that hooked was great on "oily" lanes... a ball that did not hook, or only a little was great on "dry" lanes. This was in the day of lacquer finished lanes... not seen anymore. Then there were "ditched" lanes which confiddled the issue even more... where the oil on the lane was applied to benefit better bowlers... but that's another issue... and there were ways to drill a bowling ball to make it do more or less hooking and rolling and sliding by offsetting the finger positions with relation to the the "weight block" pancake underneath the cover surface... also accomplished by drilling an extra non-finger hole to change the characteristics/dynamics similarly, but only one extra hole allowed.

Where was I ? The idea that indeed the hardness/softness of a bowling ball, and later highly porous rubber stocks circa '70's?... like the LT-48, was on every better bowler's minds. Some serendipitously found "softer" cover stock plastic balls that performed better than others. Then it was postulated that artificially softening the balls surface by one bowler would lead to even better get better results for the more expert bowlers... hence the article (not going to touch on the controversies of left-handed bowlers having an advantage over right-handed bowlers in my day). So... once the cat got out of the bag (there are always cats :) bowlers tried various means to gain an advantage by soaking their bowling balls in various substances, mostly dangerous and toxic, the best being a chemical called M.E.K.

Bowling officials became alarmed and finally came up with a density scale via a durometer and the "Durometer D" scale was established and nothing softer (ball stock) than 72 on the scale was legal anymore. I think that benchmark may have changed.

Bowling evolution continued with urethane coated lanes eliminating the highly flammable varnished lanes (fumes when first applied to the lane's wooden surface)... urethane bowling balls... imbedded "weight blocks" of various sizes and shapes within a bowling ball under the bowling ball's cover that replaced the standard "pancake" biased weight that all bowling balls in my era had...

Most bowlers in my latter bowling years brought 2 or more bowling balls to tournaments and leagues to adjust to "lane conditions" or oil patterns, using hard plastic balls for 10 pin spares (for right-handers) and adjusting to the changes over games due the oil pattern changing from use... which in my day gave the left-handed bowler an advantage since their oil pattern changed less than on the right-handers side due to there being more right-handed bowlers affecting "the shot" (I wasn't going to go there but it was a concern at the time and "lefties" were able to take advantage of such dynamics).

I've been essentially out off bowling since the turn of the century (that sounds weird) and bowling evolution has passed me by... but my heart is still there and I'm looking to purchase some used bowling shoes and start practicing again. I have a knee brace now that should help my once hyper-extended knee... but oh the cost inflation since I was active (I used to practice hundreds of games for free when I was a junior bowler and in the biz).

of the spiral Milky Way galaxy
journeys an oblate blue charm

revolves around a jaundiced sun
150 kilometers away
at first glance appears moribund

yet teems with spirited life

on the cusp, on the edge of a knife

for the eyes are the windows
of the soul and on closer inspection
endless Pyrrhic victories are exposed

the self-appointed stewards
have abrogated their responsibilities
- the ones reaping all the rewards

it is not strange that
appearances can be deceiving -
a higher intelligence is grieving

having formed the newborn orb
in its pristine state in eons past

Enjoyed this walk through an English garden.
Unrequited cherries doesn't make so much sense, I would use unrequited with certain feelings as unrequited love, meaning a love that's not corresponded. How does that apply to the cherries? I would change the adjective : unexpected, undesired, etc.

The Crucible

Well, I was looking
for a vacancy in
The Crucible,
the famous beehive
and dream of
every young
aspiring girl..
Oh the enchantment
of its numerous
cells of honey,
its comfy
waxen rooms,
the friendly hum
of working people,
and the surety
of belonging
to the best
honey factory ever.
Would I pass the test?

a maiden in færieland

An astrophysical gnome gazed into the heavens one day
and observed a meteor on course to hit near home to his dismay

by dawn even with the use of the unaided eye the meteor came into view
and færieland's tides became affected in the big blue

its size perturbed (just slightly) even færieland's orbit
and each and everyone thought that the meteor would hit

but one enterprising færie maiden took matters into her own hands
and started an incantation in the lush meadowlands

with her færie wand extended seeking to avoid the tragic
and lo! a dystopian age was averted by the use of færie magic

The Hollow Needle

In France
at the shores of a stormy sea,
there stands a venerable rock.
It´s steep and slim
a contrast to the broadsided pyramids it evokes,
but like the Egyptian mausoleum
it contains possessions
belonging to generations of kings and queens.
May the sorcerer delve in his books,
or the detectives consult their maps.
May floods of tourist visit the magic site...
the royal treasure of Château de l'Aiguille
will remain hidden from human greed

The ladybug and the pixie

Once there was a ladybug
That enjoyed traveling near and far.
She delighted in new landscapes.
But she was a very lonely little bug.
One day curious as ever she mounted an helix.
The helix took her to a grotto
which was a pixie sanctuary.
But the place had been abandoned
only one pixie was left
to take care of the grotto.
To make a long story short:
the pixie and the ladybug became friends
and with the luck the beetle brought
the grotto, swarming with ladybugs and pixies,
started to bloom again.
And if they didn't die,
they are alive to this day.

Traveling

I like the sensation of impermanence
while traveling by bus.
Bucolic landscapes seem to slip by and
effervescent communities ,
the cadence of a lost samba floating
in the afternoon...
Bunches of shamrock grow on the margins
of the dusty road...
Later, much later
the energetic cry of the sparrow
announces the impending dusk.

A little gray mouse, ate a little white louse in a big white house with a silver button. It wasn't a piece of mutton but it rung a silver bell.No rebel the little mouse started to yell. All I can tell is, it got a glimpse of a misty forest and there it went. Farewell!

Trunk

I am ageless whose name is Trunk
found in the wilderness
on a deep dark spelunk
I followed them, the spelunkers, I must confess
into the light of above
with all the stealth that I possessed

I hadn't shown them my mettle
there in the down below
showing myself first at their bonfire
whilst they put on their kettle
so dreamlike was the flame
I lost my composure and did exclaim:

"arrrrrrrrrrrrr-a-warrrrrrrrrrrr-
rag-a-tin-tagularrrrrrrrrrrrrrr !" -
(clearing my throat
for the first time in ages)
"the rocks have told me
of the heavens and stars
they whispered of seas
but told me naught else of above
for they thought I wouldn't believe"

needless to say they all disbursed
in a ragtag fashion
as bats are versed
I stayed by the bonfire till my passion had cooled
pondering the odd beings
and their ill manners

soon the full moon hung directly above
I called it by name
and it beamed ever the brighter
taking a liking to me
and sweetly sang as we conversed
and I learned the ways of the universe

the bonfire now lies cold
without even a whisper of smoke
spelunkers long gone
having entreated their authorities
who now comb the environs
for Trunk, who has left for the stars
