re Willem Elsschott:- Sorry! As I was on tablet without my archives I just put up the name of the author with the intention of completing the information in the morning. Of course there was a spelling mistake.

The tale I mean was translated as "Will-o'-the-wisp" but the original title is "The Twilight"

It's a short story, here is the beginning:

Than the search goes on. The narrator being on the side of the strangers now, gets an insight into the prejudice they are subjected to. The search goes on but they don´t find Maria. In the end the narrator separates from the strangers. They go their separate ways but a form of good will and harmony has been established between them.

Your poem made me think. It´s a different way of seing the universe.

There once was a small wilful squirrel.
It used to fly into tantrums
every time he didn´t get what he wanted.

One day he paid a visit

But there were no berries,
as it wasn't berry time.

When he was at the cusp
of his tantrums
he suddenly heard a voice
that spoke:

The squirrel scratched thoughtfully

There once was a man
who possessed a golden bowl
and a fiddle.

One day his wife fell severely ill.
He filled his golden bowl with myrrh
and went on a long peregrination
to a saints shrine.

For survival he played his fiddle
which resonated in the whole town
Although his music wasn't avan -garde
people came from far
just to listen too it.

When he finally reached the shrine
he deposited his pot of myrrh
in front of it
and said a long prayer for his wife.

When he opened his eyes
The light of the sinking sun

The Spell of the Pearl

A long time ago
there lived a king
in the Reign of the Albatross.
His son was still
a small urchin
who wanted very much
an enchanted pearl.

The king sent out
one of his men
but he came back
empty handed.
a second servant
found only an old mast.

Finally the little boy
decided he would l
seek the pearl himself
even against the will
of his parents.

He wandered for three days
always in the direction
of the horizon.

He never reached the horizon .
But, on the third day
he found the pearl
in a small conch.
It seemed to be waiting
for him.

He took it home
and palace, reign and all people
became enchanted and disappeared.

Yea, I remember
The strike of the big grandfather clock
I could see through the gabled window
Making all the mice outside
scuttle into hiding.

And I remember more:
The grandfather himself
and his grandchildren,
the boy playing with grandpas paperweight,
the girl wanting desperately
to dip her chubby fingers
in the ink well.

They are all gone now:
clock, paper, people
The empty room remains shut
only the mice thrive
on human absence.

Sometime I´ll be gone too.

Nature was celebrating spring.
Trees and shrubs sporting new green coats
while the flowers dazzled
in their colored dresses.
like young girls at a festive birthday party.

Meanwhile,
enthusiastic hummingbirds
rehearsed a multi voiced concert.

Down in her dark hole
the nondescript mouse sighed:
"Everybody is having
such a great time,

The dance of the planets

At midnight the solarium was effervescent
if not efflorescent.
The planets were holding their own party.
The sun displayed majesty and crown jewels.
Luna appeared resplendent in her silver dress.
A mesmerizing Venus appeared hand in hand
with Mars exibiting his war medals on his powerful chest.
Meanwhile Mercury tried out the dance floor in company of several young stars.
Genial Jupiter immersed himself in interminable arguments with Neptune about the rings of Saturn.
The latter had excused himself of the party,
being rather put out and grumpy because
in retrograde condition.
Uran announced the next revolution.
But Pluto who hadn't said a word hitherto
gave a sign to the musicians,
and everybody hit the floor,
weaven into the usual pattern
of the horoscope.

I hadn't an answer for such a retort

Thinking to turn the tide I flashed
my pearly whites with all the energy

an apparition bathed in apple blossom
white and took me aside - "Prithee

'twas the night before Thanksgiving
and all through the...

I thought briefly of taking the alert to heart
but to my uttermost astoniment decided to depart
peradventure to ascertain for myself
whether solid, or some fashion of gelatinity,
winged, or whatever - I took my blunderbuss
off the mantelshelf
and slipped off into the night nonplussed
the rain came down in sheets
as I entered my rustbucket and hit the streets
heading north by northwest
and there it was...
next to a flying saucer all abuzz
three meters tall - the space monster gazing
at an electronic contrivance
pointed at a pasture with three cows grazing
and gave it a second glance
and poof!
'twas lightning came down heaven sent
which startled the cows, no longer content
I bundled up the dead space monster
into the bed of my rustbucket as proof -
durn'd if it didn't look like a tardigrade
as it were,
and since it smelt like chicken right off the spit
I knew I had my Thanksgiving dinner
figgered out... just needed a marinade -

of the mysterious bubble.

It appeared one day in the harbor
just like this.
Curious people came to visit it

Famous scientists examined it
one of them pierced it with a needle.
The bubble didn't react.

But when it was pierced repeatedly
it began to shiver and to shrink.
The flood took it.

The sunbeam and the Mayflys

It was on the second day
after the great extermination.
The exhausted sun sent out
a threadbare timid beam
to the devastated earth.
Broken spaceships lay around
surrounded by melted down creatures.
A vision of ominous silent horror
threatening never to disappear.
The weak sunbeam became full of ennui,
not to say depressed,
trying to bring life and warmth to a scenario
which even the breeze had given up.

Suddenly, at the entrance of a dark hole,
it beheld some movement,
like a very slight slapping of wings.
The sunbeam stopped short
in front of the cave and watched:
Three Mayflies were doing there usual dance,
as if nothing momentous had happened.

The little sunbeam suddenly got big and strong
and the sun in full atire graced the stricken soil.
For it understood that the cycle of life and death
hadn´t been interrupted.
Life was emerging again even if modestly
with the ephemeral Mayflies.

An open children´s book,
pictures coming alive!

The sword fern leaves sway merrily in
the wind
The toadstools are cute little
red houses talking to each other.
The grasshopper tries to stay aloof
perched on a big stem.
But his sternness is just a mask,
he enjoys his reign
of paper.

The dove and the snail
were a pair of improvable friends.
Once upon a month, the dove,
tearing majestically

her terrestrial friend.
The snail then would put her small kettle on

there wasn´t room for silence.

It was the night of
the crescent moon.
In the constellation of taurus
shone exceptionally brightly.
People thirsted in the caravans,
that daily traversed the scalding dessert.

Suddenly a cry of joy
shook the whole caravan.
A gentle shower poured from the sky
and they all rushed to fill pots and pans and bottles.

They had hardly finished when
they beheld the gestalt of an oasis
emerging in the horizon.
Alas! It was a Fata Morgana.

Lily was a flower
and Ludy a white duck.
They both lived in the lily-pond
among lilies and and cattails.
and were happy.

So far so good!
But then they were drawn into an intrigue
by jealous Lolly.
Tension in the quiet lake
rose above a feather,
with all the cattails crying in unison.

This went on
until Metusaly,
the oldest duck in the pond
made an end of it.
Lolly was confined to her room
for three days
And peace returned to the lake.

It was a sight for all, who passed
that somewhat dilapidated farm:
old dungarees, checked shirt
and that pail on its head
instead of a decent straw hat.
And a big, radiant smile on its cotton face.
Forget-me-not surrounded it.
Katydids visited it.
The weeping willow bowed its head respectfully to it,
and the birds held ruidous meetings
on its outstretched arms.

In short: I survived through the grace of God and shall never be the same again.

The weather on returning home was gratefully mild... our forecast was for 0 - 2+ meters of snow and we were just above 0.00 m - though my home was 43° F (6° C) inside when I arrived due to my kitties'-sitter not being able to keep a fire going in the wood stove (kitties survived) :)

Once there was a king
who lived in a tower
in the sole company of a crow.
People thought he was a simpleton
because he had given up everything:
power, riches, friends and family
Every night there came a skeleton
out of the cupboard and
performed a forbidden dance.
Every time the dance was performed
the king fainted and remained in this state
until the morning. Only the crow
watched over his sleep.

I don´t know what to do
with this king to make him wake up.
So, as I have already used up all words
I´ll let him sleep for hundred years.
Then, if the planet still exists
and it´s climatic conditions
and it bellicose tensions allow,
maybe a traveling Cinderella
who chances to visit the tower
will kiss the sleeping king.
Let´s hope for the best.
