This charming and entirely engaging history of rural life in Wiltshire focuses on head shepherd Caleb Bawcombe. The author, W.H. Hudson, re-tells many stories that the old shepherd remembers from the mid 19th century. The stories and language paint a picture of a rural idyll that has been lost and the importance of this book is the fact that the author has taken the time to sit with Bawcombe and document this important rural history.
