I have a question- Why does Tartuffe offer Elmire licorice when she is coughing? Was that a common remedy then?

Tartuffe: Satire or Spoof?

Many people question whether Tartuffe is really a satire or merely a spoof. Although the characters are overerly theartrical and a times ridicuouls does not mean that the play has no deeper meaning than comedy. I believe Moliere makes his character so obvious that the audience doesn't get fooled. In this play it is quite obvious that Tartuffe is not who he claims to be, which helps the audience immediately focus on the other characters reactions to him. By making the character very cliche, I think that it allows the audience to notice hypocracy in their own lives. What do you think?

Tartuff a play by Moliere

I think it is funny that no one is talking about Jean Baptiste Poquelin. His like was as intresting as his plays. if any one wishes to coment please write.:bawling:
