The Trail of the Lonesome Pine

(1908)

Dedicated To F. S.

This is a love story between an Appalachian woman of culture and the man Jack that is from the world. The book captures the effect on families and changes that Appalachian folks have endured due to the industrialization era. The two families are affected by unwanted changes as well as cultural values and assumptions that are challenged. The story coincides with the infringing outside world influences on the secluded region when a boom in coal mining creates economic wealth. Socioeconomic characteristics from urban areas impose their values in a way that significantly threats long held folk beliefs.--Submitted by Anonymous
