This is a sweet story which takes place during the American Civil War. The story takes place on a remote Southern Plantation. A young girl who is left orphaned is a ward of her wealthy aunt and uncle who have kept her sheltered and try to force her into a marriage against her will. With the war all about them and rumors from both sides as to the outcome Miss Lou is forced to learn to think for herself and grow up in that regard, while at the same time trying to retain her dignity and self-respect. Her courage and strength of will are tested and she gets often feels abandoned by all but the slaves, who are devoted to her. Unfortunately the story was never finished and one is left to come up with an ending on their own. Otherwise it is wonderfully done.
