Seamus Heaney, the 56-year-old Irish poet burdened and blessed by his reputation as heir to the bardic mantle of William Butler Yeats, won the 1995 Nobel Prize for Literature Thursday.
Announcing the world's richest and most prestigious literary award, worth more than $1 million this year, the Swedish Academy praised Heaney for poems ``of lyrical beauty and ethical depth, which exalt everyday miracles and the living past.''
