Introduction:

Between The Wind Among the Reeds and this briefer volume of 1904 two
important things happened to Yeats. First, he became seriously involved in
theatrical business (he'd confined himself simply to play-writing before),
founding with his patroness, Lady Gregory, Edward Martyn and George Moore the
Irish theatre society which ultimately became the world-famous Abbey Theatre.
And second, he experienced, in February 1903, the terrible shock of Maud
