Introduction:
If Crossways was a first book of lyrics dealing with Indian and Irish
themes in a rather derivative and weary pre-Raphaelite manner, the poems of
1893 which appear in the section later called The Rose make more direct use of
imagery drawn from a subject which had long been most important to the young
poet - the occult. The Irish material, of course, remained central. But Yeats
