Introduction:
Yeats often remarked that he would like to forget and even omit from
the Collected Poems this first book of lyrics, published in 1889, when he
was only twenty-four. But then, he wrote (in 1925) "I have . . . remembered
an old school friend who has some of them by heart, for no better reason, as
I think, than that they remind him of his own youth." And so he did the next
best thing; he revised Crossways carefully and, as always, superbly. Thus
