In 1978 I began piling up boxes of 5x7 cards (the ancient way of taking notes) on Willa Cather. Four years later I received a book contract. These journal entries' begin with a visit to Cather's longtime publisher.
September 8, 1982. Pub. dir. Bill Loverd introduced me to elderly William Koshland, who worked with Alfred Knopf when Cather was about to become the star of the five-year-old company. Offices quite plush, but WK seems relegated to a small corner where (I guess) he is no longer the power he was. Told me that Alfred first met Cather at Yehudi Menuhin's 21st birthday ...
