Just a few pages into the first chapter of O Pioneers! Willa Cather introduces Marie Tovesky, a Bohemian girl visiting the farming village of Hanover from her home in Omaha. The little girl, about six years old, is in her uncle's general store, surrounded by a group of local men. Mostly hard-scrabble farmers enjoying much-deserved relaxation after a difficult year of breaking the Nebraska prairie, they tease Marie with offers of candy and gifts as she decides which of them she will name as her sweetheart.
