Nine people died in Chicago in the wake of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s 1968 assassination.

Rioters set fires and raided storefronts, angry mobs overturned buses on the South and West sides, and Mildred Rosenberg, principal of Willa Cather Elementary School, still managed to successfully evacuate all of her students and get them home safely.

In her 45-year career as principal, her position at Willa Cather was certainly her favorite, and getting the kids out safely that day was definitely her proudest moment, said Mrs Rosenberg's daughter Peggy Wolf.
