University gets Cather diary copy

MARYVILLE, Mo. - A rare copy of a diary Willa Cather used to write "One of Ours," her 1923 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, has been donated to Northwest Missouri State University's library in Maryville.

"The diary is a splendid addition to our collection both from the literary and historical points of view," said Catherine Palmer, the library's archivist.

Ms. Cather persuaded Frederick Sweeney, a World War I ship doctor who treated her for influenza, to lend her the diary because she wanted a personal account of what life was like aboard a ship headed to war.
