Not for twenty years does Jim keeps his promise to come back to Antonia.
He knows that she married a young Bohemian cousin of Anton Jelinek. He has
heard, too, that they had many children and for years were not prosperous
because her husband lacked force. Jim once sent her pictures of her native
village from abroad, but has hitherto avoided visits for fear of finding her
old and worn. He prizes his early memories and wants no more illusions
