Book IV - The Pioneer Woman's Story

Graduated from Harvard after two years, Jim comes home before starting
law school. Frances Harling is now married, but his grandparents seem
unchanged. People talk pityingly of Antonia. Having gone off to marry Donovan,
she was deserted by him and now has an illegitimate child. Jim wonders why she
could not have done so well as Tiny or Lena.

The town also sneers at Tiny, who went to Seattle to open a hotel for
sailors. Looking back, the elder Jim admits that then no one could have
predicted her ...
