In this section Jim is seen as the lonely outsider generally at odds with
the town. When he rejects the Progressive Euchre Club and its successor, the
Owls, and deliberately courts criticism by associating with the country girls,
he is taking a strong stand against certain Black Hawk values.
Jim, it must be remembered, was not born in Black Hawk, or even in
