IN LAST SUMMER'S ALL-MALE PRODUCTION of The Importance of Being Earnest at the Abbey Theatre, Wilde's language, Conall Morrison's direction, and Joan O'Clery's costumes made the Y-chromosome almost irrelevant. The director's vision seemed not to be a reinterpretation of Wilde but a radical understanding of notions implicit in the play: the characters revel in and flaunt their own artifice.
