Robert Lowell came out against the war in Vietnam. The Czech Republic elected a playwright president. In a prescient speech last October Vaclav Havel suggested, "The warning voices of poets must be carefully listened to and taken very seriously, perhaps even more seriously than the voices of bankers or stock brokers."
