Crossing Brooklyn Ferry
Background.
Claimed by Thoreau as his favorite, "Crossing Brooklyn Ferry" is one of
Whitman's long poems as well as one of his best developed. It was originally
called "Sun Down Poem," in the second edition of Leaves of Grass in 1856; the
present title was assigned in 1860.
It seems natural that Whitman should have written a poem around the idea
of a ferry boat and its trip across a river. He was exhilarated and inspired
by the movement and mystery of the sea, and by the "river and bay scenery all
