Background.

"Out of the Cradle" is considered to be one of Whitman's finest poems.
When it first appeared in a New York literary magazine in 1859, "Out of the
Cradle" was entitled "A Child's Reminiscence." Later, in 1860, Whitman
incorporated it into the third edition of Leaves and altered the title to "A
Word Out of the Sea." By 1871 the poet had made revisions, and the poem
appeared with the title by which we know it today.
