Two Final Poems.
"Facing West from California's Shores" directs Whitman's attention
toward the Orient, which he believed to be the location of the origin of
life.
Facing west from California's shores,
Inquiring, tireless, seeking what is yet unfound,
I, a child, very old, over waves, towards the house of
maternity, the land of migrations, look afar, . . .
The persistent Whitman notion of evolving life cycles, moving and
returning through forms of existence, appears again in this poem:
