Starting From Paumanok
Background.
"Starting from Paumanok" is one of the two most autobiographical poems in
Leaves of Grass; the other is "Song of Myself." In the poem the personal voice
of the poet blends with the broad, more representative persona. In the opening
lines of Paumanok, we are given straight biography by Whitman:
Starting from fish-shaped Paumanok where I was born,
Well-begotten, and rais'd by a perfect mother,
After roaming many lands, lover of populous pavements,
Dweller in Manahatta my city, or on southern savannas, . . .
