Virginia Woolf's 'To the Lighthouse' reflects Jacques Lacan's theory that love creates a sense of being in giver who is reflected in the object of love. However, the need for independence is as strong as the interdependence of the self and other in a loving relationship. Thus, love is both beneficial and destructive, as realized in Mr. and Mrs. Ramsay's marriage.
