Carol Shields is a small, pretty woman with bright blue-grey eyes, unabashedly white hair, five children and five grandchildren, whose first novel wasn't published until she was 40.

When she turned 60 last year, her seventh novel, The Stone Diaries, won her the Pulitzer Prize. The international bestseller had already won Canada's top literary prize, the Governor-General's Award, and was short-listed for Britain's prestigious Booker.
