I FIRST met Tobit Roche 20 years ago, when we were art students.

Since then he has become a successful painter and set up home with his partner, Nancy Oakley; they have two children, India and Duncan (in memory of his friend and mentor Duncan Grant).

Their house is in an enclave of quiet little streets in south London. "We are a close community here," Tobit says as he splashes lamb shanks with brandy and puts them into the oven.
