Victor Hugo was a monumentally talented writer whose political sensibilities created contradictions that biographers such as Graham Robb must sort out. Hugo had a family background that allowed insights to the politics and culture of his time. His passions for the poor, however, may have created a romantic perspective where a more realistic one was due.
