Victor Hugo influenced the novels of Emile Zola. Zola himself acknowledged his debt to Hugo in a review of Hugo's 'Les Travailleurs de la mer.' He acknowledged the influence which the characters of Gavroche, Jean Valjean, La Esmeralda and Quasimodo had on him. Hugo's influence can be shown with an intertextual analysis of the first novel of the Rougon-Macquart series, 'La Fortune des Rougon,' in particular of the character of Miette who is in many ways like Esmeralda.
