Victor Hugo, Charles Dickens and Anatole France succeeded in terrorizing the 'feminine' in their historical novels 'Quatrevingt-treize,' 'The Tale of Two Cities,' and 'Les Dieux ont soif,' respectively. In these novels, the 'terror' is depicted in conventional terms as self-interest, fanaticism, pragmatism and class conflict. While the paternal is symbolically killed in these works, little attention has been focused on the impact of the 'terror' on the feminine aspect, in the forms of the mother, anima or simple gender.
