La primera versión en cine de Los Miserables data de 1933, fue realizada por Raymond Bernard y en ella se hacía hincapié en la situación política de ese momento, antesala de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, para restablecer los valores de una sociedad que los iba perdiendo por la desesperación, por la incapacidad de sus funcionarios y la corrupción.
