Oct. 29--Victor Hugo Salas' first lesson in quality woodworking came at the tender age of 8, while visiting his uncle's shop in Mexico.
His uncle was the patron of shoeshine boys, building shoeshine stands so they could earn a modest livelihood. Salas, excited about earning his own coin, asked his uncle to make him a shoeshine stand.
"Make your own!" was his uncle's annoyed retort. Salas' effort was much too wobbly, so he tried to steady the joints with gobs of putty. His uncle tossed the piece out and it came apart.
