PARIS (AP) _ In southern France, schoolchildren painted illustrations of Victor Hugo's famous quotations. In Waterloo, Belgium, musicians played along to his texts. And people from Asia to Latin America watched a film version of "Les Miserables" on television.

The 200th anniversary of 19th-century author and politician Victor Hugo's birth is being celebrated all over France this week _ and as far afield as Miami, Tokyo, and Taipei.

Hugo, born Feb. 26, 1802, is best known for novels such as "Les Miserables" and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame." ...
