Dateline: PARIS The French Senate paid tribute to Victor Hugo on Wednesday, part of a nationwide celebration of the famed writer ahead of the 200th anniversary of his birth next week.

Hugo is best known for novels such as "Les Miserables" and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," but he was also elected to France's National Assembly and the Senate. He was a determined advocate of civil rights for women and children and campaigned for the eradication of poverty.
