THE sea is never far away in Guernsey. There's a saltiness in the air, a certain quality of light that tells you, wherever you go on the island, one of its haunting seashores is less than two miles away.

Add to that the setting, adrift in the channel between Britain and France, and you have an intriguing blend - beaches, cliff paths and winding lanes that take you back to long ago summer holidays coupled with gourmet restaurants and fabulous shopping.
