Frost was invited by President John F. Kennedy to recite a poem at his inauguration in 1961. Kennedy chose Frost because he had defended New England against a radio interviewer's question as to whether the region was in decay.
IT IS more than 30 years since a poet stood beside a president on Inauguration Day. This time it was the black, southern, inspirational presence of Maya Angelou (who comes from Stamps, Arkansas, about 25 miles from Hope), who hymned Mr Clinton with a poem which sounded like a mishmash of T.S. Eliot's "Ash Wednesday" and "The Politically Correct Handbook."
