The Women of Canterbury speak of the deadness of winter and their desire
for spring to come bringing the promise of new life. The Three Priests enter
bearing banners: the first, of St. Stephen; the second, of St. John the
Apostle; and the third, of the Holy Innocents.
Comment:
The first speech of the Chorus refers to the year which is coming to an
end and the winter which symbolically and actually concludes the old and
