Introduction To Murder In The Cathedral
In view of the fact that Murder in the Cathedral is considered by many to
be one of Eliot's finest works and possibly the greatest religious drama ever
written, his account of the motivation for his writing it should be noted. He
once told an audience that he wrote the play because he was requested to
provide a play for a festival in Canterbury Cathedral, "under certain
conditions and by a certain date." We can only assume that Eliot had some very
definite ideas about what he wanted to say and how he wanted to say it ...
