Mentored by Rabindranath Tagore and Nandlal Bose and a contemporary of Ramkinkar Baij, Benodebehari Mukherjee (1904-1980) achieved some measure of fame only in the last 10 years of his life. An artist, teacher and thinker, he chose to keep away from the limelight. That delicate, quiet strain ran through his works as he chose to paint everyday objects from temple bells to the dolan champa flower in subtle, muted colours.
