BORN IN CALCUTTA, RABINDRANATH TAGORE (1861-1941) received his earliest
education at home within the warm embrace of a large, wealthy, extended
family. Although his father wanted him to be a barrister and sent him to
law school in England when he was 17, young Rabindranath did not finish his
studies there. Instead, he returned to India where he slowly accrued
moderate success in Calcutta as a writer, playwright, songwriter, poet and
philosopher. As he got older, he helped manage the family estates, a role
