Ray, Satyajit (1921–1992)
Indian film director, composer, and writer. He was appointed a Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur in 1989. Ray was born in Calcutta and attended the university there, before studying art and poetry at Rabindranath Tagore's university. He then became a commercial artist (1943–56), making his first film, Pather Panchali (1955), on a part-time basis and founding Calcutta's first film society in 1947.
