MILLIE Benson, a dedicated newspaperwoman for six decades who wrote the first 23 "Nancy Drew" mystery stories about the intrepid teenage detective, died last Tuesday after becoming ill at her desk at the Toledo Blade newspaper in Ohio. She was 96.
Paid a paltry fee and no royalties by the syndicate publisher Edward Stratemeyer to create the Nancy Drew detective series in 1930, Benson infused the character with a backbone she felt other fictional heroines of the time lacked.
